The stolen ski thread got me to thinking about my equiptment and how rough I am on them. I don't get my panties in a bunch ifin I get a gouge or two in the base, a chucnk out of my edge or any of that silly crap. Total opposite of my bud I ski with. He's forever taking his skis off checking them even if he thinks he's come close to hitting something. Drives me nuts watching him do it---I bust on him terrible about it.

Your skis---babes or brutes???

Closer to beaters. I try to avoid rocks, sorta think "oh crap, that was a rock" when I do, but don't think too much of it. No core shots to date, though.

Skis are disposable. I have a season tune so I can dump my skis with the bases all trashed and nicks in the edges and they come back looking brand new.

def beaters, i destroyed my new skis from last year, with major de-lam on both of the sides from bumps, some good size core shots, bent in edge from a tree, i broke both of my bindings last year, once at bolton valley VT and the other at sundown, but i got marker to send me the new part for free. so yeah def, beaters

Nothing but beaters here. My equipment has always been disposable. I destroyed a board last season going down blockbuster at Plattekill with a foot of pow and nothing under that. It was one of the best runs I had all season.

Beaters . . . Usually I care the first 3 or 4 days about them, but after that, I just let it go . . .

My new Goats, though, are going to be my babies . . . Only to come out in the deep stuff and out west . . .

Preseason tuneup, check bases after skiing, re-wax and sharpen as needed during the season. I saw some small handheld edge sharpeners at REI, but never tried em. Anyone tried one?

be carefull most of those sharpeners are just a course file. you never really need to file your edges unless you have some bad gouges. just get yourself some diamond stones and guides.

BINGO!
if you are going to do it your self guides and clamps are the way to go!
most hand helds aer garbage.
Oh what ski are you trying to tune It helps to know what bevel angle to go with.
All atomics ate 3deg base and 1 deg side
Head skis come out of the box with a 1+1
I have found that a 1/2-1base and a 2 side works for just about any EC ski(cept atomics keep them at 1 base and 3 side)!!!

heed hardline's advice...ditch the mini bastard file they come with and go with a diamond stone. ok, hang onto the bastard for heavy edge work if you hit a rock or really need to bring back the edge...diamond stone for 90% of the time.

i'm concious of what I'm skiing over and take care of my edges..take care of the burrs, etc...some minor flesh wounds in the base are inevitable. it helps that i tend to have a fresh couple pair a year...tools of the trade...ad tools work better when they're maintained.
