Backcountry Access with a Snowmobile

The traditional way to access the backcountry is to earn your turns. Has anyone used a snowmobile for the uphill portion of the trip? Obviously, on choice places like Tuckerman's or Mt. Mansfield, it is verboten. However, for NELSAP's, Greylock or some of the slides in the Adirondacks, it could work well: 2 people seated and 1 towed up the hill. 2 people ski down and 1 drives down; on 2 out of every 3 runs, you get to ski.

Now this may sound like sacrilege for the earn your turn diehards. I say more powder for the people! :daffy:

I would be fine with doing this if the appropriate venue was available. No Sacrilege here. I use chairlifts so there is not much difference to any other kind of access. Exclusive turn earners might cry sacrilege.

Timberside at Magic is now a snowmobile area so that is the only place I can think of off hand. Watatic is right off a snow mobile trail so that would be another option. I am sure NELSAP areas open to the public for multi-use would be the best option. Moosilauke has snowmobiles on the Carrige Road. You just need to find someone willing to tow you up the hill and then drive back down without skiing themselves.

I was thinking about that when I was hiking Greylock a few months ago. They do have snowmobile trails there. I was thinking of getting a non skier with a sled though. :snow:

I exchanged a few PM's with a guy here who was going that in the Manchester, VT area. It wasn't at an old area, but rather just some hilly terrain. I should probably touch base with him this season and try to meet up.

We do that around here, albeit on a very low level but there are some nice open woods around these parts.
