from experience regarding my first BC tour, you learn a LOT that first time out. you will be amazed how much you did wrong.

when I first skinned at wildcat I learned that you get hot, very quick. I mean most people understand you will get warm, but you get extremely hot. When I skinned up to bobcat(about 800vertical ft) I was wearing no hat and only 2 extremely thin layers(no shell, or anything with wind resitance) and was still sweating, and it was only 30 degrees. I was actually so hot that I took a run up the quad with only that on, and it was probably only 20 degrees up top. Lets just say this wasnt the smartest decision and after 2,000 ft of vertical I was a wee bit cold :dunce:

This is so true...wear layers, bring a pack big enough to hold a few of them as you peel off clothes when the heat builds up.

Bump.

So what has everyone done for touring/backcountry this year so far?

Me so far:
1 day at Jay before opening.
1 day at Stove before opening.
1 day just skiing the summit area of Cannon before the tram or cannonball chair was open.
0.6 runs at Wawa on grass and ice before opening.
1 run on the Sherbie.

Once my frostbite heals and Why-choose-it gets some snow (hopefully) I'm going to skin the auto road once or twice a night atleast once (hopefully twice) nights a week to prepare for spring time.

Once april comes around I'm hoping for 10 Mt. Washington days and about 5 days skinning closed mountains closer to home.

What are you doing?

Austin, how when did you get frostbite?

Skiing at Jay in some nice -10 degree temps + my boots cut of circulation to my toes. I usually unbuckle my boots or go in the lodge more but the skiing was good, and it was too cold to think about unbuckling my boots. Also my feet just went numb so I didn't even notice. I actually remember saying something to Steve on one of the last runs about how I couldn't believe how good my feet felt. Little did I know...

I actually just went to the doctors and I'm probably out until march. :x Luckily I'm a senor in high school so after that I'm planning on taking atleast a day off every week until the end of april to go skiing.

I skinned up to Tucks and was only wearing a light breathable shirt in 20 degree weather.. Colder in the shade sometimes.. Was wearing snowbaord pants - maybe a bit too heavy...

My sweat was passing through the fabric and freezing when it hit the air.. It created a dust that i could brush away...

Skiied J Peak, Big and Little J yesterday. There were tracks, and some shrapnell still poking thru, but there was also ALOT of snow. The area was pretty hammerd, if you could find unskiied lines they were really good found some Beaver Pond pow. The slack country was in good shape, with 25-40 inches of fresh snow. Not much base underneath that, but c'mon, hard to complain. Fresh lines abound all over little J. 800 vert of virgin terrain, and someone had allready set skin track and split after 1 run. Evidence of alot of cutting in there. I was drooling over the hardwoods across 302 from Big J. Looks like long trail S would make for quick laps of that side. The steep stuff down to the road in the dip looks a bit boney still.
Lets hope for another 12" this week. Stake is at 52ish on mansfield. :)

Bump, again. Since then I have added 5 Mt. Washington days, a day on Cardigan, and one night skinning the Wawa autoroad.

So 12 days touring so far, with 7 days actually in the backcountry, and 2 days skiing over 5,000 ft. of vert.

Hopefully I'll add a June and July day to bring my season to 10 months and 14 days touring.

Anyone else?
