Bands that "jumped the shark"...

The phrase "jumped the shark" comes from that Happy Days episode when Fonzy tries to jump over a shark on waterskis, signaling the point at which the show starts to suck. Let's apply this to bands. I'll start:

One of my favorite bands: Van Halen.

Some would argue anything after (or even including 1984) is when VH turned south. I actually like 1984, and 5150 and OU812 with Sammy Hager. For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge was a turning point though, and I think the band jumped the shark with that album...

Pink Floyd jumped with "Animals", especially "Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict." They had some good stuff afterwards, but that album really moved them out of relevancy.

Animals is a "desert Island disk" for me... An incredible album... Great lyrics, music and ideas... I'd say it's my favorite Floyd album...

I think you have the wrong album. Several Species is on UMMAGUMMA. An album marking the low point and end of PF version 1. Barret, Waters, Mason, Wright, and a little Gilmour with no say musically.
what came after Ummagumma is the Floyd as it is known today. Waters, Wright, Mason, and Gilmour.
Ummagumma is crapola. Animals is a work of genius musically and lyrically.

DSOTM, WYWH, Animals, and the Wall are the Floyd everyone hears most. Final Cut was mainly a Waters solo album and MLOR and Division Bell are written just by David (although still pretty good musically). A couple of Syd's albums, like PATGOD and Saucerful are great. Then they released Ummagumma. Atom Heart Mother and Meddle were a couple of transition albums (pretty good ones) into the "modern" floyd.

Metallica jumped after Master of Puppets. Black Album was okay, but then they went WAY downhill. AC/DC jumped after For Those About To Rock. Razor's Edge was OK, but the rest weren't that good.

I'll just comment on a few things:

-Animals is a great album.
-Someone mentioned in another thread that GnR jumped the shark with Spagetti Incident - I agree, but it's not like they did anything after that.

It's unfair to say that a band jumped the shark after they lost a key member - the sound can never stay the same.

Also, there are many bands that I might consider that jumped the shark, but they just really changed their music style - sometimes the general public digs it.
ie - Radiohead. Loved Pablo Honey and the Bends... after that they got so obscure with most of their stuff - I could say that they jumped the shark, but most of the public prefers their latter stuff anyway.

Metallica jumped after Master of Puppets. Black Album was okay, but then they went WAY downhill. AC/DC jumped after For Those About To Rock. Razor's Edge was OK, but the rest weren't that good.

I thought And Justice for All was amazing. So I would say Black album, pretty much everything on that album is horrible IMO, espicially sad but true and enter sandman:uzi:. I actually liked load a lot more than black. I really like bleeding me and the outlaw torn, but still nothing like the older albums. So anyway Black Album= "the shark jumped"


...and man don't let me started on stuff on television. I think the simpsons jumped the shark many many years ago and just wont give up, its truly painful to watch now. Way worse than any band I have seen...

Congrats to WIKEDBUMPER and ZAND for knowing their Floyd.

There's another album in there...pre-Meddle (Meddle is awesome IMO). It was terrible...I know Meddle has a song Pillow of Winds...this "pre-album" has a similar title.

I've got "A Nice Pair" *Marc/Dozer, no comments*...meh....and "Ummagumma"...blech. One of my sons has a (live I think) version of Animals...the first and last songs linked by a Gilmore solo. Much better entertainmnet in a noisy car enroute to the slopes. I mean "Dogs" would be tough on a noisy car.

Deep Purple. Egad, I'm not a fan of the "Hush" days. In fact, I just recently learned that was their song! I guess they were later popular in Japan? "My Woman in Tokyo"? meh. I wasn't a "Top 40" kind of guy. But Fireball and Machine Head....even my 20's sons love that stuff.

thanks Sky, I'm still a big floyd fan. theres a movie soundtrack they did called "zabesky point" or something like that. I know I spelt it wrong. after meddle comes "obscured by clouds" then the run of great albums begins...DSOTM, WYWH, Animals, and the Wall.

Hey! We have our own thread for that! I disagree with you, however. The formation of The Other Ones, and now "The Dead" after Jerry died was the jump. I like their solo acts much better now.
