First time out this year (long story), had to pick up my Empire frequent skier card so I went to Discovery Lodge- the lower lots were already full at 10:25 but I lucked out when one car happened to be leaving. It was as crowded as a holiday weekend, something I didn't expect at all. Also didn't expect how good the conditions were- Belle picked up 3'' or 4'' overnight. Skied all the trails on the upper mountain except the 2 that rely on natural snow, which were roped off- conditions in the morning were really good, with snow later getting scraped off a bit in the center and pushed to the sides- no problem, I just skied on the sides. For example, here is the berm on skier's right of Mohawk at 3:30...

Good stuff. And here's Roaring Brook for a last run warm down…

Cathedral Brook and Utsayantha were closed but plenty poached...

I also didn't expect it to be so cold- the thermometer at Sunset Lodge read 22 degrees around 1:30 when I stopped for a CB and hot cocoa- winds were gusty up there too. Flurried on and off all day. I warmed up later at the Overlook Lodge fireplace, then noticed they replaced the outside deck with this...

Not sure what it is, but I would say it represents a commitment not to raze the Overlook, contrary to the disturbing rumors I've heard over the last few years- so that's good news. There were no lift issues, though lines at the 2 high speed lifts were substantial at times. All in all a much better day than expected.

Never made it out today, we thought Belle wasn't going to get that much, McCauley didn't. After leaving work in a frigid squall, I wondered how bearable a day on the slopes would've been today. Did Belle have any lift issues due to wind? Did the gondola spin? Seems like a must have to tolerate the weather yesterday, that or a bubble chair.

I made it to Belle yesterday. Conditions were great and the place was empty. First time on Cathedral Brook in fresh snow. Very Platty like.

Website yesterday reported 12" and webcam showed the Gondi was spinning. Wish I could have gone. Platty reported 10-12"

Snow looks wet?

Looks can be deceiving? Light fluffy, all day. Started dumping around 1pm so the drive down 28 sucked. Belle hadn't done anything to treat the access road. I watched the shuttle bus almost go off the road when he had zero traction at 2mph. There was almost a nice chain reaction crash when every car behind it (me first) realized we were all without any traction.

At least 28 was better, though there was no visibility till Kingston.

As much as I hate the drive, I'm considering heading back up to hit Platty tomorrow since it's a guaranteed powder day.
