Belleayre Mountain, February 15, 2007:

Introduction: Second snow day in a row, but the roads were no where as near as bad as yesterday so I headed up to Belleayre with my friend. There was least a foot of fresh powder, if not a foot and a half.

Weapon of Choice: Option Supercap 149

Conditions: First run was down Tongora/ Chippewa glade to Belleayre Glades. Decent coverage, a few sticks poking out but really a nice tree run. Hit that up about 7 or 8 times over the length of the day. From there we decided to test out the powder on Cathedral Brook. Cut over from Roaring Brook since we didn't want to hike all the way to the top, and the Beast wasn't running today (shuttle to the top of Cathedral Brook). Wow, so much powder, got stuck a few times before I got my feet under me. Unfortunatley, we took a wrong turn (right instead of left) at the intersection and had to hike quite aways through deep powder back to the trail. Luckily someone before us made the same mistake, so there was at least some trail to follow. After that, we were really tired, so the natural thing to do must have been to hike to the top of Cathedral Brook, all the way up that damn hill  . Totally worth it! Took the left turn at the intersection this time and headed back to the Superchief lift. Took another run down Belleayre Glades, then met up with a bunch of other friends and headed over to Tomahawk. Dot Nebel was nice, two runs on that, but we were getting cold and headed in for lunch. Took some more runs down Belleayre Glades after lunch, then hit some of the trails in between Lift 7 and Tomahawk (Esopus, Peekamoose, etc.). TONS of powder as these trails get such little traffic, especially as empty as Belleayre was today. Headed to the terrain park for the last few runs of the day... landings were nice and powdery and the jumps got worn in by the time we went over. Took one more run on Superchief, Tongora to Belleayre Glades. Great way to end the day, really stoked about the conditions at Belleayre for the weekend.

Weather: COLD!!! Temperatures were in the single digits, and wind chills were around -40. Had to go in to warm up a few times other than the lunch break.

Lifts: Totally empty, the snow on the roads probably scared away a bunch of the city people and it was a Thursday, Belleayre is usually empty midweek. Maybe one or two chair waits on all three upper lifts (Superchief, Lift 7, Tomahawk) as a max.

Notes: First glade runs of the year, and the snow really helped out the base.

Rating: 9/10

Conclusion: POWDER DAY!!! A little too cold though... All in all one of the best days this season.

We were there today too. We came prepared for the bitter cold, and wind, so we only went inside for lunch. Totally different mountain from last weekend. We hit Cathedral Brook a couple of times from the mid-point down and it was a blast. There was hardly anyone there today. My favorite diamonds were Peekamoose and Algonquin since they were almost untouched. The glades were not "officially" open, but they had a fair bit of traffic ;-) I suspect tomorrow will be busy with the $15 lift tickets, and the Friday before winter break.
