Belleayre Mountain, December 8, 2007:

Introduction: Eh... got like two hours of sleep last night, so I didn't get up until 12. People were saying it was sort of skiied off but I gave it a shot.

Weapon of Choice: Endeavor Colour 156

Conditions: What a difference from Monday until now. Almost twice as many trails, and tons of powder to be found. Tomahawk was open for Dot Nebel (mid-station down) via a shuttle (and you could ski back), but I didn't hit it, didn't want to waste any time. Didn't hit 7 either, Superchief was just too good all day. Started off on Onondaga, tons of powder on the sides still and there were some real nice jumps on the second headwall (sort of) part. Woods were amazing for this early in the season, tons of runs and some nice exit jumps. Wanatuska was icy up top, no more bumps... You could see people poaching on Belleayre Run and Tongora all day, the ski patrol didn't seem to say anything either, so I took laps on Tongora all day. TONS of powder, best riding of the season.

Weather: Fine... haha it was such an average day I can't describe it.

Lifts: No more than 2 minutes....

Notes: None.

Rating: 8/10

Conclusion: Such an improvement over last weekend.

They were too busy--along with the mid-station lifties--yelling at me to put down my restraining bar to notice. Is that normal around here? Those lift tower-mounted bullhorns seem a little excessive for such a peaceful little mountain, at least for something as harmless as a grown man riding single with the restraining bar above his head.

Definitely some decent snow to be had, though...

Using the bullhorn to tell people to put down their safety bar is standard procedure in NY state. NY state law article 18 requires all safety bars to be put down. Belleayre is owned and operated by NY state. Go with the flow and put down your safety bar. How bad can it be?

Good to know, I guess...will do.

They can be fairly uncomfortable for tall riders (especially on older lifts), and they do not to much of anything to prevent chairlift accidents--which almost always occur during loading and unloading--but I'll make sure to "use restraint devices in accordance with posted instructions" while I'm here.
