Area skied: Belleayre Mountain N.Y.

Date skied: March 25th, 2006 from 8:30am - 1:00pm

Surface conditions: 3" of new snow, powder, spring conditions (lower mountain)

We made our way up to the Catskills and noticed new snow covering the higher peaks from the Thruway. As we drove west on route 28, we entered the snowline near Belleayre at about 2000' in elevation, the thermometer in my car dropped down from 40F on the Thruway to 32F at the deserted Tomahawk quad parking lot.

We where totally suprised by the 3" of new snow on the ground and we hurried up to boot up for some fresh tracks.

My friend and I got fresh tracks down Seneca Pepacton and Dot Nebel. Yahoo Headwall had huge powder covered moguls and Onteora had moguls with nice, well formed lines on the lower section of the trail.

The snow had softened things up alot by about 11:30am and the runout to the Superchief Quad (Ashokan and The Canyon trails) was getting a bit thin and the snow had an ugly brown color to it. Most trails are well covered and Onteora, Yahoo as well as Seneca have several feet of snowcover remaining. Crowds where nonexistent all day and after skiing 14 runs in a bit more than 4 hours we called it quits and headed home.

Belleayre should easily make it into April, we got a good look at Plattekill from Deer Run and we could see quite a few large bare spots on some trails.

I forgot to mention that lift tickets were just $35.00 for a full day of skiing, not bad for a resort that has 34 out of 42 trails open.

Thank you, we hit Belleayre at just the right time to get in fresh tracks, probably for the last time of the season. I would like to go back there this saturday, but the weather looks bad and I have to work on sunday.
