I dont really see Belleayre as being a "resot mountain".

I love the mountain though, that is were I learned to ski in trhe Skiwee program.

This isn't actually the ski resort, though. This is a separate project from Belleayre's intended expansion (it'd be mainly a golf resort). In fact, from what I hear, all this flap over the Crossroads project is holding up Belleayre's planned slope expansion. Too bad, as it would allegedly put their vertical up well over 2000' (if it ever happens).

2K vertical now that would be impressive, where would they be able to expand to do that? They would need another 600 to get to that number and i dont see how thats possible?

Depends who you ask. They've been playing their plans pretty close to the vest, so it's hard to say. One version I've heard would push new trails down the east side down to where Belleaye Beach is in Pine Hill. That would make for something like 2200'. That'd be so cool.

Problem is, for this they need land which is owned by Crossroads, who've said "no way" to this. I'm betting, it'll wind up a bargaining chip for trying to push their resort plans thru. And that plan seems all but dead in the water. Which is why I say, if it happens; it'll be tangled up in court for years.

One thing they could do, is expand all the way down to 28 (thru the x-country areas. But that'll only get a few hundred feet more at best.

On the upside, they've just about finished up replacing the "Super Sloth" with a high speed detachable quad, though I think the mid-stations gone now. Oh well...

I have only skied in Belleayre twice, during early season, cause they seem to get the snow guns going earlier than most others would. But it really seemd like the continuous vertical opportunities were not there. Is there a terrain that would allow 2,200 continuous, relatively steep vertical?

No I dont think there is the terain to have worthwhile expansion down. The bottom fo the mountain below super chief is so flat for the beginers you have to work a bit to keep moving.

I agree with that too, those trails on the bottom half are very gentle to the point where u have to pole sometimes..

Belleayre has some great terrain that isn't on the trail map. If they decide to make the cliffs public I would be a little disappointed, but that goes back to the discussion I had with DMC last season where they are always looking to beat out Hunter.

What are the cliffs?

Two places I can think of. One is under the lift from the quad on the west side. The other is on the East side beyond the trail they opened last season.

On a good snow year we drop the cliffs under the Quad at Hunter...
The Catskills usually have sweet drops near the tops of the mountains...

bellayre really doesnt have the vertical to make it worth while. However i have heard of a little secret at the moutain, i guess there were a few more trails, of another mountains that are no longer in use on the side, and its untouched, so if you go to these trials after we recieved a decent amount of snow you will see some of the staff guys ridin a make-shift park that they create every year.. not sure if this is true or not.. anyone know?
heard about this through a friend who works on the park staff

If you go directly east of Belleayre mountain and then down into Pine Hill there is some awesome steep areas that will add up to close to 2000 foot of vertical. Here in this picture east of Cathedral Brook and then down into Pine Hill shows a little of what I am talking about. Have you skied the upper part of Cathedral Brook? What if you had 2000 foot of vertical that looked like the top part of Cathedral Brook? Would you like that?

Just before you turn left off Route 28 into Belleayre you go up a big hill with your car. By developing east and down into Pine Hill, you would be skiing that vertical you drive up before entering Belleayre.

As for competition between the 4 Catskills ski areas, I don't look at it that way. For example, I think the additional high speed quads added to both Windham and Belleayre will in the long run help both Hunter and Plattekill. I personally enjoy skiing all 4 moutnains in the Catskills. Having Belleayre, Hunter, Plattekill, and Windham so close to each other makes the Catskills a very interesting place to spend 4 days skiing. I have yet to get over to Bobcat. Maybe this year.

For example, the success of Jackson Hole helps Grand Targhee on the other side of the Tetons. I would not fly to Wyoming just to ski Grand Targhee. I do fly to Wyoming to ski Jackson Hole and then take one day to ski Grand Targhee.

BTW nice to finally meet DMC at Belleayre last weekend.

Good to meet you (although briefly) as well..

And i agree.. When dealing with "mid-sized" areas - it helps to have a few of them to choose from in the same region..

That other place is called Highmount and has what looks like some pretty good terrain. Too bad they want over 3 mil for it. So it looks like it is going to rot.
