Date(s) Skied: Sunday February 17, 2008 open to close
Resort or Ski Area: Berkshire East, Charlemont, MA
Conditions: Sunny and probably 10 F at 8:00 am, 30s and sleet/rain by 3:00 pm
Trip Report: The day started with clear skis and rising sunshine. Due to the interesting weather this week basically the entire mountain has been groomed but in excellent condition (read basically all natural trails are closed (Grizzly, Jug, any glades and Liftline)). Since the parents and brother-in-law and his 4 year daughter were headed up I decided to get there early and help open up the mountain. So started the day with blazing fast GS turns down upper Minnie Dole to UMASS to lower Minnie Dole. Then cycled between Minnie Dole (top to bottom) and UMASS to War Dance with a Cloud run mixed in. Conditions were stellar and tons of fun. Then the family showed, so off to Top Notch and the Quad the get in some family time on the mellower terrain. Wilderness was also in good shape. Crowds were a little bit more than normal for Berkshire East (read liftlines of say 2-3 minutes instead of ski on and off. Conditions held up very well throughout the day. Around 2:30 or so it began sleeting/raining (basically emptying the place out). Pretty light, so wasn't all that bad. The temps rose throughout the day and by 4:00 we were skiing spring type lose granular (final runs down Exhibition and then one last run down UMASS and Cloud).
All-in-all a great relaxed cruising around day with good company and great conditions.
The year's base building (for the natural trails) is now a solid 1-2 feet almost everywhere covered by a 2 inch later of crust. So any new snow they get will open up the entire mountain and will be sure to bring grins for ear-to-ear.
That's all folks!
