Today was my first visit back to Berkshire East in over 10 years and I must say it is really a nice place to ski. We arrived at the ski area at 9:30am after driving up from Bridgeport in a little more than two hours, and the drive was quite pleasant with interstate highway for 90% of the trip.
My first few runs were with my son and we skied Outback to Exhibition and the conditions were packed powder and groomed snow. Next we skied Mohwawk to Roys way and again the snow surface was a nice packed powder with some hard pack in spots. Big Chief was also in similar shape with very few people on any of the above mentioned trails.
My son took a one hour lesson and that gave me time to explore the steeper parts of the mountain. Jug was bumped up and on the thin side on the upper part of the trail. Flying Cloud had good cover with some icy spots just below the top of the double chair. U Mass was my favorite trail with small bumps and some thin cover. Grizzly and Minnie Dole were also fun with some thin areas to ski around.
Basically the natural snow trails are OKAY, but they are getting skied/scraped off quickly, so rock skis would be a good idea for next week on the steeper trails unless there is more snowfall. The mountain has an amazing amount of variety for 1,180 vertical.
Lift lines were virually non-existent before about 1pm, and even then they were 5 minutes at best for the summit triple, the double chair was not in operation today.
The snowmaking trails have PLENTY of cover and skiing until Easter will be no problem for this place. I will definately be visiting the area again next season.
