Unexpectedly Great Weather

My folks and I went to Berkshire East today.

I introduced myself to Roy, the owner, after he directed us to a parking spot. I like what this guy has done for Berkshire East.

For most of the morning, tiny ice crystals were falling from the trees, anytime we were under or near them.

Jeremy Clarke told us they had to re-groom the mountain since the weather was so bad last night. Sure enough, the groomers were out and about. Certain trails were closed until they had been groomed. Any trail that was recently groomed was awesome. Any part of any open trail that was not groomed was death. My folks and I were very impressed with the good work the groomers did and we enjoyed watching trails like Minnie Dole, Mohawk, and Flying Cloud open as the morning went on.

By about 11:30, the sun had come out and it was beautiful. It was mild anyway, so the sun just made it that much better. The longest lines for the triple chair were about 3 minutes. The grey double never opened. There was never a line for the quad and Exhibition and War Dance were in beautiful shape. Exhibition's got a small terrain park with rails and a jump (Sorry snowboarders. Is it called kicker?).

Most of the lifties were excellent as they loaded us onto the chairs.

The West Lodge was open. It's pretty nice and the tables and benches look brand new.

I think today could have sucked at a ski area with less commitment to grooming. I'm glad my folks and I went to the Beast.

I forgot to mention, there was a race going on all day on Slalom Chute. Their cheering section was the loudest crowd I'd heard at a ski area in a long time. The racers were college students. They actually didn't seem like they were high level racers.

Thanks for alerting us about all the improvements at the Beast. It sounds like a great place. I'm going to ski either there or at Hickory Hill, NY on my way to Quebec next Saturday.
