I'm still trying to figure out how the French Canadians came up with Poutine before we did.

It's a vegetable, fried in animal fat, topped with milk fat and more animal fat.

To me, that sounds like an All American food right there.

A mountain burger or the "black and bleu" burger at Christiansen's at Jiminy Peak is great. Legit bar/grill food. It's like $8 with a soda.

Agreed. We stayed at the Country Inn this past January and ate there twice. The steak was a little disappointing but the black and bleu burger was excellent!

I know the thread says best food, but I'm going to throw out a beverage. The hot chocolate at Mohawk is amazing. I would swear they used half and half or cream. Mmmmmmm, hot chocolate.... Not the healthiest statement but I dropped 25 lbs since January so I don't feel so dirty.

Deer Valet has the best cafeteria food.

Ski Santa Fe has the best chili

The lunch buffet in the Cliff Lodge at Snowbird is really good. So is the lunch buffet at the Stein Ericsson Lodge at Deer Valet.

Gwynn's High Alpine at Snowmass is the best upper mountain white table cloth dining

Sushi Village at the bottom of Whistler rocks.

I love the meat pies at all the base lodge cafeterias in New Zealand

Sauerbraten and spatzle with a weissbier on the deck of the Bavarian at Taos on a sunny day is great

Pretty much anywhere you go in Europe has great midmountain food

ASC has the worst food known to man and Okemo isn't far behind. I can't think of anywhere I've been in New England that is particularly memorable. Before they shut down the Sunrise/Northeast Passage part of Killington, skiing down to the Back Behind was an event when the skiing was bad.

Poutine (basically, cheese fries with gravy) at Jay Peak. Worth the trip!

the poutine is great, Jay improved their Nuggets and Fries this year, hot wieners, the Pizza is good too. New to the table this year is fried dough with the option of powdered sugar or cinnamon. I get the daily special that includes a special, fries, and a drink, usually some good stuff.

So far the best chili I've had was at Stratton - with a bread bowl, cheese and sour cream... Yummy! A little too heavy for lunch for me, though.

The best lunch is an empty trail/ lift line during lunch hour ;)

MRG Hamburgers

I know I am certainly biased but I would put Mad River Glen's burgers up against anyones.
Meat deleivered daily from Mehuron's Market (our local butcher)
Always fresh meat, never frozen
Always cooked to order
Great selection of fresh condiments (lettuce, tomato, relish, etc...) that you can put on yourself.

As an aside I agree that Saddleback has awesome food at great prices. I espescially loved their bakery/coffee sho in their beautiful new base lodges. Man, we would kill for a facility like that!!!!

Also, I too LOVE jay Peaks poutin!!!! What's not to love?

I stand corrected... _THOSE_ are the truest words ever spoken...

ASC has a corporate policy to limit food costs to 15% of sales price. This pretty much assures that the food will be both expensive and horrible.

The poor quality is well documented:
4/6/99
WASHINGTON (AP) - Authorities are investigating an outbreak of illness from E. coli-contaminated ground beef after at least six guests became ill at a Maine ski resort.

The people became ill while visiting the Sunday River Ski Resort in Bethel, Maine, said Dr. Kathleen Gensheimer, state epidemiologist for the Maine Department of Human Services.

The first illness was reported Feb. 11, and three people were hospitalized, Gensheimer said. Everybody in the group, which included four children, has recovered.

Really?! That's horrible. That explains some things.

ASC's food drove us to brownbagging, which was the best result anyway. They have good beer available, so props for that at least.

People mention good food at Stratton. Maybe it's an Intrawest thing. Food at W-B was expensive but good. I wouldn't mind paying for quality (though I'd still brownbag most of the time), but ASC food is just insulting.

Best ski area food?

My vote goes to the John Paul lodge at the top of the John Paul lift at Snowbasin, UT. While the base lodge and Needles Lodge are equally opulent, the ambiance is fantastic here at 8900' in the shadow of Mt. Ogden. The food is truly gourmet quality at LESS than the prices charged at the chow halls of the areas of the east. How about a bowl of spicy, vegetable filled Italian seafood chowder garnished with a couple of Pacific-Northwest mussels, served with crusty bread and butter for $5.00? Picture a 16' four sided firplace, massive log beams, beautiful carpeting, padded Louis IV chairs, and food served cheerfully on china with real silverware! Oh yes, with everything bussed for you by staff. All wouldn't matter, if the food were not so good. One of my friends (who had not previously been to UT, although he has skied CO a number of times) insisted that we ski Snowbasin again on our second trip out there this past winter. I suspect it wasn't just for the terrain. He is a retired wine distributor who LOVES to eat really good food. When you ski Snowbasin, you get both great skiing and great food.

I had a really good hamburger at the Rams Head Base Lodge during Thanksgiving (actually the best one at a ski area all year)weekend and the food at the Sugarloaf Base Lodge was all cooked to order and served on ceramic plates with real silverware.

On the last day of the year at Sugarloaf, they actually gave some of the food/drinks away for free.

I thought the food at the Jackson Gore lodge was excellent, the breadbowl soup was tasty and all the dessert pastries where fresh. The lodge was immaculatly maintained with staff constantly wiping down tables and vacuming the carpets, even during the buzy lunch hour.

Intrawest is pretty awesome. 2 years ago, was at Whistler Blackcomb and because of the poor snow the food was discounted 50%. They didn;t have to do that but it was nice. and the food was great.

the food at the mid mountain lodge at Stratton is also pretty good.

i like the food at the Bag and Kettle at Sugarloaf.

i had a terrible plate of Nachos at Okemo. the Nachos tasted like cardboard!

I don't know of any really "good" food in the East. Whiteface does a pretty decent job.

The best I've ever had was at Lake Louise. They had baked ziti, real Mac & Cheese, great burgers, awesome breakfast sandwiches. It was like real food...and cheap!!!

I really don't understand why the food at ski resorts has to be so crappy and expensive. Actually, it's probably all about profit, but still, they can all do much better!

The house went on the market last week. We have some showings scheduled for this week-end, and one couple is coming back for a second look. Keep your fingers crossed for me, I really want to get out west for the coming season.

The market has slowed down dramatically since about mid-march. We have reduced the asking price on our house twice now, and we have only had one offer.

We are going to low ball the owners of the new house that we buy in Connecticut, especially if it is just built. There is a glut of houses on the market.

Good luck though
