3 nearby resorts, good people, lots of places to see and things to do. It may be my next hometown.

I'll pass. I lived and worked in Snowshoe for a year, also taught at Davis and Elkins College. If I never go back, I will be a happy man - I despised the area that much. The weather is awful and the stereotypes of WV people are fairly accurate. Outside of Morgantown, there is no place in WV that I would ever consider living. I'd rather live there and be 45 mins from Wisp and an hour and 15 from Seven Springs, than be in Elkins with Canaan/Timberline/Snowshoe an hour away. In fact I'd rather be in Shrewsbury, Mass next to Ward Hill than in Elkins.

Now there is a difference of opinion. Dang Burlington hippy, opps another fairly accurate stereotype.

Topic was best ski town in the East...

Not that it would be my pick as the best ski town (although the best Thanksgiving skiing I have ever had in the "east" was in that neck of the woods), but since when was WVA removed from the east?

Thank You!

Yeah, that was a quick skim on my part. My bad...I tend to block out anything outside of New England as not being the east.

I think Burlington has moved on from being stuck in the 60's. If you want to relive the days of free love and peace just drive down any dirt road in Vermont. Places like Putney, Goddard College, Chelsea those are the kinds of places most people think the entire state is like.

Burlington has lots of traffic, sprawl, big box stores surrounds the downtown and typical suburban developements reach out for miles in every direction.

I went to Burlington often mainly for shopping and I could not wait to leave and get back to "real Vermont".

For a small city it is pretty nice and there still is alot of crunchy people but it no longer dominates like it used to although folks still gather every year at UVM to light up those doobies in public. I love the Recycle North store. :D

I lived in Burlington in the 70's. Burlington today has pretty much lost all it's character. Back when the drinking age was 18, the town had over 100 bars. It's now completely gentrified in the downtown. You can get a double decaffe latte but you're not going to find a dollar draft. The sprawl in the surrounding area is disgusting. South Burlington looks more like New Jersey.

You natives would certainly know better then me, but I really enjoy visiting Burlington. I guess it's what you're use to. I live in the defination of what upstate NY suburban sprawl is. It's a collection of cookie cutter, perfect lawn, subdevelopments (puke). Burlington looks good to me. I do see your point on South Burlington, I guess I'm thinking more Church St. and surrounding college campus areas.

Hardly.

Route 7 does suck though.

I was through there last spring. The amount of development off of 7 up by the lake is immense though...and those houses ain't cheap.

Still, to me, Burlington is a nice small freindly town.

What you need is mass transit....and I don't mean buses...

An old joke I heard while living in the Burlington area:

What's the best thing about Chittenden County?

It's so close to Vermont.

I just read this thread, adn I'm shocked. Shocked, I tell you. You mean there are towns around ski areas? And people go out at night in them? I know there's a good pizza place otside of Killington, but that's about all I know. What are you guys doing on the slopes that you have energy to go out at night? And don't forget the Santa Claus effect- the sooner you go to sleep, the sooner Santa will come and dump some freshies for you.

I'm shocked too. I thought you Kmart aficionados where all in it at least in part for the nightlife. I don’t think I know anyone who goes there just for the skiing.

I've been to Kmart twice, and neither time did I sample any more of the nightlife than whatever that pizza place on the way out the access road is. I'll save my drinking for when I can be hungover at work the next day, not on the slopes.

Good one, heard that joke many a time. I've spent far more time living in Stowe than here in Burlington as I do now. My decision to do so is purely based on available employement.

There certainly is some truth to this statement, though the area is putting in programs to prevent the sprawl. The Winooski downtown redevelopment project certainly is a good example of it.

If you look you can find $1 drafts. Duff Hour every day at 3 Needs. They tap a barrel of Saranac everyday for the Simpsons and pints are a buck until its gone.
