Anyone know if Blue Hills in Mass frowns upon skinning before they open? I don't really care if they yell at me, I just don't want my car towed while I am on the hill.

Figured they don't open until 2pm tomorrow so I can skin up and be gone before they spin the lifts...

No uphill traffic allowed.

isn't that a state parking lot, used by hikers etc?
how would they know which car is a skinning poacher vs. a lawful hiker
so, I can't see why they would tow, though parking while they want to plow there might be a diff. story.
call the museum, ask them if it's okay to park there during the storm.

I was going to say skin up one of the hiking trails and ski down. Just avoid any staff/grooming/etc.

Any insight on if they leave the main slope natural or groom it out? I assume that is the only trail that has enough pitch to make it worthwhile.

hmmm... well that is just stupid. It is public land... oh well the DCR website specifically says:

Blue Hills Reservation Ski Touring and Cross-Country
Blue Hills Reservation, Milton/Canton, 617-698-1802
Open seven days a week, dawn until dusk. Bulletin boards, Maps and trail Markers delineate the route. The public is welcome during daylight hours. For more information and trail maps, call reservation headquarters.

GAME ON.

Now just got to figure out where to park where I can easily access a way up...

Never make it up a hiking trail unless you took the autoroad, which obviously not a hiking trail.

It says on the website:

Blue Hills said:
Special Notes:

All patrons must have equipment and a snow pass to be on snow surface.

It is outsourced by the Campgaw people. It is DCR property.

yeah I saw that, but am not going to worry about it... If they do I will challenge them to a ski off which I will win obviously.

There are two hiking trails next to the museum which look skinable. If not the road it is!

Take the road or just be quick heading up the left side near the carpets and disappear.

I really don't think you will enjoy the hiking trails from my experience. If you have not hiked through there in the past, they get real rocky and steep, believe it or not.

I hiked back on the other site of blue hills over the summer... and I was VERY surprised how rocky it was. Thanks for the tips.

Sure thing. Just be careful. It's not like you will be dealing with regular 'resort' like employees over there.

Let me know how you make out.

If you don't care about a lift, why not just ski Nichols Street in Norwood ? From the High School down to the Cleveland School is more verticle feet than Blue Hills.....

So did you go in the end? How was it?
They seem to be cool with people skinning up as long as you have a ticket.
I myself was thinking of getting there at sunrise this sunday and doing some runs.
I don't know if the road up the backside will be plowed, possibly not.
My only concern would be the groomers, probably they groom in the morning.

i ended up going during the storm last week. No issues what so ever. My buddy got there before I did and skinned up and 'skied' down before I arrived. He told me to not bother putting my skins on as it was faster to just boot up the hill. We met two snowboarders that worked at blue hills that were booting up as well. They were both friendly and did not care we were hiking. They just said be friendly to anyone you see and there shouldn't be a problem.

I took one run and decided it was not worth my time to hike back up. I was on my 2011 obsetheds and they floated in the heavy snow very well, but there was not enough pitch on the trail I took to make more than one or two turns.

When I first arrived one guy that was shoveling the stairs said "we don't open until 12noon" I just nodded and kept walking by. He was just giving me a heads up and didn't care what I did.
