Resort or Ski Area: Blue Mountain
Conditions: Boot deep death cookies ranging from the size of baseballs to house cats.
Trip Report: So I was all stoked up that Blue was going to open up before the 17th after all. I got out there at 8:25, quickly booted up in the parking lot and I'm up to the ticket scanner at 8:35. Vista was actually great. Nice packed man-made, similar to Camelback yesterday. On to Midway...much firmer, but edge-able, all the way down. Then with the merge on to Main Street you were instantly treated to huge wall-to-wall death cookies. Yuck. On to the lift and I'm talking to the guy next to me. He doesn't think it's that bad. I told him it's embarrassing. He tells me that the more people ski it, the better it will get .
I saw Toast, AtomicSkier and GSS skidding down Mains Street. As I get off the lift, out of habit, I start to ski off to the left, only to realize that Upper Main Street is roped off. WTF? So now I head over to Easy Out into Vista. Nice snow there. After my 2nd run down Main St, I decide that it's going to be my last do to the dangerous conditions. I waited up for the PASR crew and we chatted for a bit about how lame the conditions are.
Everyone is calling it quits due to safety concerns. I skied 3 more runs off the Vista Chair, chatted with Aderrick for a bit, and then left. I was getting soaked in the freezing rain anyways.
What I really want to know is why-oh-why were they grooming out the base area in the Valley yesterday afternoon while Main Street still had whales on it? A complete waste of my time to drive there and back. Next year when I get all stoked up to ski opening day, somebody please smack some sense into me. It would have been safer to skied everything un-groomed. The Ski Patrol should be embarrassed for not shutting down Lower Main Street for safety reasons. It got so bad, the Ski Team wouldn't even touch it. Camelback, at it's worst yesterday (after Marjie's was all rutted up on the headwall) was far better then what Blue had to offer. It took me almost 2.5 hours to get home due to all the roads getting iced up.
Camelback opening yesterday made sense. Good snow, bluebird day. Blew opening on death cookies and freezing rain = waste of money.
Short Version: Blue opening day wasn't worth the trip.

It would have been safer and smarter to ski the lift line.
