Amazing is right as few others... Why? Because he

had won all 3 (olympic) gold medals during the Grenoble 1968 Olympics since then for the combined title. DH: 1. GS: 1. SL: 1 (68). Just before the specialized skiers started to appear. As most skiers today specialize. Killy was the last of the combined style of skier(s) and their were a few traditionally speaking when looking back at the 60's racing WC programs or earlier.

Franz Klammer is still rated number one for downhill (85). Phil Maher and Ingemar Stenmark battled for years for the overall WC slalom titles again specialists. I remember Klammers best race personally with his 2 second lead at Innsbruck during the olympic telecast. The course was glare ice, DNF's all race but he just nailed it. If you find a clip watch it, its a killer spectacular run as he was accellerating the entire run.

I know I'm an older skier but back then racers just went for it under very questionable conditions every day where today the race would be cancelled period far more often.
People did get hurt also back then quite often.

Racing has come a long way where safety is concerned which is a very good thing in my books. It was a different time in many ways.

People and athletes though today are accelling and Bode Miller's turn is here hopefully he can hang-on for more success but consider also has has already made it into the records for sking history, currently as the second overall points leader from the US, Phil Mahre is still #1 due to points only.

Todays courses are slower somewhat safer but far more technical where endurance is now a big factor. If Bode has another good season or two he will be the #1 US most accomplished skier to date. Billy the Kid, Cindy Nelson, Tamara McKinney, Phil Mahre, Bode Miller... Hmmmm... the US has a lot of good skiers... That I remember...

Very cool stats site thanks... for the link, it brings back memories.

All the best!
Whoa :snow::beer::daffy: :beer: :daffy::snow:

As one older skier to another, we overlooked another true skiing star, someone who was often overlooked because of peers like Killy...that would be Gustavo Thoeni. Another amazing skier.
