Millers in third in overall standing as of now.....NICE.
Some other strange news about the sport. 5 skiers, men and woman, will have to cough up 20K to keep racing. Seems like their is a shortage of money or as the management says...a relocation of assets. The 5 will be determined by their performance standings. These people barely make enough to survive let alone cough up 20 grand. Imagine if other athletes had to do this. A hell of a lot of pro athlestes get paid to sit on a bench. . Too bad this country is just not interested in this sport.

Yes it is a damn shame that skiing takes a BACK seat in this country .

Unfortunately the overly fed , button pushing , ZERO aerobic activity , potbellied, couch potato herd mentality that exists in our society just DOESN"T get it.

Thus the network greed hogs/ sponsors can't sell them more crap with which to shorten their life expectancies and so won't expend any effort to expose the masses to the sport . SHAMEFUL

Funny thing is that even here most people don't have any interest in it. The almost total lack of coverage by anyone is a good reason. Having to suscribe and watch the events on a computer takes out about 90% of the audience, too much trouble to bother with.

Maybe the reason ski racing doesn't get much coverage is cause people just aren't that interested. Sports that are really popular are pretty easily accessible to the average American. Baseball, football and basketball are all pretty cheap and accessible to all so you have a wider audience of interested people. Skiing is pretty limited in that sense - financial and georgraphic hurdles. I don't know if I would be at all interested in watching ski racing if I never skied.

Then again, I don't know how to explain all the people I know that watch football, tennis and the various big games and never, ever play them. I guess skiing needs an Ana Kurnikova.

I've been watching skiing since I was...well real little, even though I never skied. I tried it a few times but never liked it. I found watching it pretty cool, a lot more exciting than baseball or football. It's too bad that it never got big and the skiers are pretty much unknown in this country. Bode has a way bigger fan base in Europe! The best part for me is that I have been able to ski several downhill courses. Lake Louise mens and womans, The Grizzly in Snowbird (the headwall is a plunge) The womans run same area and the Birds of Prey at Beaver Creek. The fact that they straightline these things is amazing. Oh, and the one at Whiteface.

snowBASIN. Also in Utah. It's the one with a fancy lodge. Do you remember Bode's Olympic run on that one?

Bode's anti-team stance probably doesn't help his image here (and neither did his 0-fer in the last Olympics). People don't read the backstory as to why he doesn't train/work with the team...if they see anything, they prob just see the headline "Bode refuses to practice, join team" or something.

Damn, I am at work and have already spent too much time on this..... How did I miss that thread? Too much running-thinking in October and not enough skiing-thinking, I guess.

I'm thinkin' that ski women beat tennis woman in general now. We don't need a Kournakova, we gots lots of 'em, but since they compete in a lot more clothes they don't get into the media with automatic eye-candy!

Miller ties American record with 27th World Cup title

WENGEN, Switzerland (AP) -- Bode Miller won a downhill race Sunday on the Lauberhorn to match the American record of 27 World Cup wins.

Miller, who won the same event last year, finished in 2 minutes, 30.40 seconds.

"It was extremely fun. It didn't feel that good in terms of the quality of the skiing but I was very aggressive," Miller said. "I kept really pushing forward the whole time. There was no braking."

Didier Cuche of Switzerland was second, 0.65 seconds back, and Manuel Osborne-Paradis of Canada was third, 1.33 behind Miller.

Miller, who broke away from the U.S. Ski Team to compete on his own this season, now shares the record with Phil Mahre.

The historic downhill course on the Lauberhorn varies widely, featuring both the fastest and slowest stretches on the men's tour. The straight Hanegg section pushes racers to speeds up to 94 mph and a passage over a bridge in a curve forces them to slow to 44 mph.

At 2.8 miles, the Lauberhorn is also the longest course.

Miller trailed Osborne-Paradis at the first split, and failed to match Cuche's speed under the water station tunnel where skiers duck under the Jungfrau region's famed cog railway midway down the piste.

But the 30-year-old American pulled away on the long, gliding sections in the second half of the course. After clearing the famous jump into the finish, he looked at his time and pumped his fist.

"I take a little bit more of a direct line," Miller said. "I just cut off a lot of distance, especially when the speeds are a little lower."

I really doubt the average skier, let alone the average non-ski-fan lay person in America, even knows Bode split from the US Ski Team. Skiing does not get much press or air time because most people do not care about the sport. Even most people that ski could care less about racing. Part of that is culture because most people that follow sports do not actually play those sports. A good portion of the public never played the sports they follow. Racing used to have a presence in the United States, though not terribly big. But enough that they were featured on a weekly sporting show during the winter (help me with the name, ABC Wide World of Sports or something?) and the fledgling ESPN would occasionally show an event or two before it went to its current popularized format and you have to be "extreme" to get air time if you are not one of the major sports. It is just a culture thing. And because ski racing is not part of the sport culture of this country, people just don't care. Nothing personal, and I can understand. When I used to watch TV, every time I saw surfing on TV I just didn't understand.

I'm just psyched he won these 2 races and sure as hell hope he wins at least one more. I think Phil Mahre's constant bad mouthing of Bode is awful. At least now, Bode is the most decorated American Skier. Now if he can only win at least one more overall. I don't want to jinx him but he seems to be skiing really well. And, moreover, he is getting stronger now as the season progresses.
