I would have skied there tomorrow, but because of showers in the forecast they won't be open. I was planning on getting there around 4:30, after the rain/showers, and hitting the bumps hard until close. Not anymore.

So, Sundown has accomplished one thing they hoped to do. Attract skiers with their committment to moguls. However, they defeat that accomplishement by not opening when the bumps will be best for skiing. Face it, this time of year, hitting the bumps on a cold day after warmth and rain is not an attractive option. Tomorrow and tomorrow evening Gunny will have perfect spring bumps. Tomorrow night they will freeze up, and with temps staying in the mid 30's they won't soften on Thursday.

So.....booo to Sundown.

But the man has to be free to run a business, so what are you gonna do? Maybe the forecast temps for Thursday will come up a bit, but I'm not holding my breath.

i agree with you. i was hoping for a couple of hours on wed evening as well. but i think being 2 weeks out from bump or bust and wanting to preserve a respectable run for the comp is in the back of their minds. i think in the long run it is a wise choice. every other hill in CT will be closed as well... i would imagine.

I don't know. From Sunday's reports it sounds like the Gunny bumps could still use a little skiing in, although I guess they'll get a lot of that this coming weekend with sun and temps in the 40's.

Course, that does me no good because I'll be hitting up legit terrain this weekend at WF instead of sallying around on a feeder hill with a bunch of C.L.I.T.S. :) ;):daffy::beer:

From what I read in those reports, the bumps were getting awfully bare in spots. Even on Saturday, there was a big bare spot right at my favorite spot to ski in (and how I recognized it). Preserving base is probably a good idea at this point.

Also recall that it was around this time last year that they had to start closing midweek days because of rain/high temps. It's not that unusual.

Gunny was epic again today. I'm not a fan of shutting down either, but I now anticipate it and plan accordingly. One small flaw among a lot of good things so I'm willing to give a pass. I would rather they stay open later because they still have the snow.

After the warm weather this weekend, the rain yesterday and, the inch plus of rain tonight and Wednesday the snow is saturated. I don’t think any geographically challenged ski areas that intend to be open into April will be open tomorrow. After it drains we will be able to work it again and will reopen wall to wall with no bare spots.

No smackdown intended. Being closed is still lame.

So is not having a mini-pipe. Oh wait, you have one of those now....

I trust your judgment. You know far better than any of us armchair Internet "experts"....

Yeah, me too. As I said, they are the one's who have to run a business, as far into the spring as they can. Still disappointing though, given I was hoping to make some turns.

I know what you're saying. I pulled into the Sundown lot a few years ago one morning just as the rain was ending and they were closed. I shrugged and drove to Hunter.

It is frustrating, but unfortunately it's what I've come to expect of late season skiing down here in CT. :(

I trust Chris's, and the rest of Sundown's staff's, judgment on when to close for snow management purposes.
