Date(s) Skied: Feb 7, 2012
Resort or Ski Area: Breckenridge, CO in the morning and some backcountry up Mt. Bross in Alma, CO later in the afternoon with the pups.
Conditions: Breck: Dust on crust.
Bross: powder. varying from a foot to 2 1/2 feet.
Trip Report: Started snowing pretty heavily in Alma and Breck Monday night. Breck claimed about 3" on Tuesday while here in Alma we had about ~10" in our driveway alone. Headed to Breck first thing yesterday morning and went straight to the t-bar. Got on the Imperial Express and headed to Peak 7 bowl. Lapped this 4x, did Whales Tail the first, then hiked the other three times further right to Magic Carpet. Headed through the trees in the Boundary Chutes on the last run and then hit it. We had talked earlier in the morning about how we should have hiked up Hoosier Pass or done the Knoll right below Mt. Bross.
We got back back around 4:00 and decided to do it, the snow was just to nice to pass up. After getting all of our gear prepped and ready we left for our hike with gear and dogs in tow around 4:45. Made it to the top of the knoll around 6:00 and it was definitely dark but there was a full moon which was good. Luckily I had the two guys (vdk03) and our friend Phil breaking trail for me. We took turns but even with snowshoes on we were sinking 1-2 feet. We made it to the power lines and decided it would probably be easier to traverse along them then breaking trail through the snow. It was light out for most of our hike but definitely dark by the time we clipped in up top. With headlamps on we stayed close to each other and skied untouched 2 feet of powder from the top down. At one point near the bottom we rounded a steep corner and were all stopped dead with snow up to our hips as the ground leveled out. Dogs were having a blast. Great trip, a lot of work but well worth it. Having hiked it previously before this recent storm we knew that there was already thigh deep snow in the trees way to the skiers right, but we will save the tree run for the daylight. GoPro died at the top so unfortunately no video. Here are pics.
