Resort or Ski Area: Bretton Woods
Conditions: Powder, Packed Powder, 10 degrees, partly cloudy with patches of sunshine in the mid-afternoon, windy but not too annoying
Trip Report: Got to the mountain at about 930 am. It had snowed the night before so there was a lot of fresh snow all around. Started out on the blues on Mt. Rosebrook to warm up then moved over to West Mountain.
The glades were still closed despite the snow the past few days. Cut through the glade at Agassiz to get to West and, though the snow was still fresh, it wasn't deep enough so my skis kept brushing against the rocks underneath. It was great skiing on that side of the mountain. Despite the fact that there were some black diamonds there (Little Tuckermans and Waumbeck), they weren't too difficult at all. But, it was great playing there since there was new snow -- and there was hardly anybody there!
We moved to the other side of Rosebrook hoping to ski the Canyon Glades but that was closed so we just McIntire's Ride, Blackforest Glade, Deception Bowl and Bode's Run. There were absolutely no lines on the lifts so me and my friends were like bouncing balls going up and down the mountain.
Took it wasy after lunch and did some more runs on West Mountain then did as many blue runs off the Zephyr HSQ and Fabyan's Express. Again, I have to stress that there was hardly anyone there. Perhaps it was because people were spread out all over the mountain but it was a nice feeling not having to wait around in line -- either on the lifts or the lodge. The other great thing was that there was hardly any sign of ice on the trails. After the ice skating I did at Jay last week, this was a relief.
Only wrinkle was that the Zephyr HSQ was shut down after lunch due to mechanical problems. It was up and running though later in the afternoon.
Sun came out at around 3pm and that was a great way to end a good day of relaxed skiing. It was my first trip to Bretton Woods and I recommend this to anyone just wanting a laid back time on the slopes. Though it may be boring for more advanced skiers, I had 2 novices with me and they were able to go down "blues" and "blacks" with ease. That was great for their confidence and their interest in skiing though I had to warn them that they shouldn't think all blues and blacks are this manageable.
