Ski Resort: Burke Mountain

Date: December 24, 2007

Conditions: FG/Death Cookies

Weather: Temps falling through the 20’s, clouds overtaking early sun.

2007-2008 Report # : 14

Trip Report: I went up for some turns at Burke, not knowing what to find. My recon this morning at the house didn’t look too bad. Though the temps were falling, the snow seemed to be still soft. I could see that we did get some significant rain though. The storm only dropped a trace of snow at best.

I drove up to the mountain and was the fourth car in the lot. I had an idea that they had groomed 10 trails and figured we were doing Willoughby and the training slope at the very least. The snow phone was not too helpful…and at the risk of sounding blunt, I will say that it has not been too helpful this season at all (not mentioning specifics as to temperature, what lifts are open, and regularly updating it).

As I climbed up to the Lodge, I realized that the snow was quite firm up there. Talking with patroller SL, I learned that things were very firm and anything not groomed was not too good.

I had the rock skis, so no worries. I was the fourth skier on the quad. First run was down Willoughby, which was firm and had some occasional death cookies. This was the only run off the top that was groomed. Truth be told, the groomers were not able to get to the mountain until earlier this morning and they did not have time to really groom it up well.

Lower Warren’s was about the same…and anything not groomed had a trace of snow on top of FG/ice.

I did another spin on this run, taking Lower Bear Den before cutting down to High Meadow’s Pass. After a break in the Lodge, I did two runs on Bunker Hill, which was about the same as upper mountain…death cookies and MG-FG. For some reason, only Bunker Hill was groomed…nothing else down there. Folks were trying to ski an ungroomed Binney Lane. Didn’t look or sound too appetizing.

I closed the two-hour tour with one more cold spin on the top. Snow was on the way…and as of this afternoon, there is hope that it is piling up. We may get 3-4 inches before it is over.

I left at 11:15 and touched base with the original trailboss and his wife. My advice is that you let things sit…a night or two of the groomers working their magic will make a world of difference.

We’ve lost Middle Fox’s and maybe Ledge’s. The rocks and undergrowth is beginning to poke out of the snow.

Thanks for the candid report. I think I'm waiting until week's end to get out, even though I'm on vacation all week. Give them a chance to do some trail work. I don't expect progress on Christmas day.

This morning's report says 15-24 trails groomed, which tells me that they had a looooonnnnggg night. To really grind this stuff up, you need to groom it slowly and sometimes make two or more passes. With two groomers, I imagine this takes a long time. I'd say they probably groomed the usual suspects...and tonight may add to that....

There is a chance that I may get out this afternoon for a couple hours...stay tuned.
