Resort: Burke Mountain

Conditions: 5-6 inches of Pow, Chowder later on.

Weather: Snow, highs in the low 20’s.

2007-2008 Trip Report #: 20!!! 4TH POWDER DAY of 2007-2008!!!!

Trip Report: When I went to bed last night, we had no new snow, but this morning was a different story. The snow phone reported 2" of powder, but when I went to clean off my car I found more snow than that in my yard, and as a general rule of thumb, the mountain usually gets twice as much as we do.

I pulled in and the report was upped to 4 inches, but truth be told, there was a good 5-6" out there...boot deep.

Grabbed my skis and skated to the Quad where one guy and his two buddies refused to share their first chair ride. I looked to the next group in line, and before I could say anything, an older woman cut in front of me and stole a spot. A couple other locals noticed and chuckled..."dude, I bet you blow by her on the top," one said to me.

"She doesn't know I just waxed my boards." I whispered back.

The story gets better. Turns out I got third chair and as I got off the lift, and as foreshadowed, I blew past her as she struggled in the deep snow. I scored first tracks down Upper Dipper. Sensational. I was hooting and hollering...all to myself. By the time I got to the pavilion, there were a couple other tracks from patrollers and a few BMA kids flew by me. No worries. I jumped onto Dipper Doodle and found the goods. Amazing. It was boot deep fluff and still dumping.

Next run was Wilderness-Powderhorn-Lew's Leap. The new snow made the hard bumps on Wilderness a bit tricky, so I did my best but found the goods. Powderhorn had some tracks, but "my side" was unskied. I was the second skier down Lew's Leap...it skied nicely.

With my legs underneath me, it was time to sample Ledge's. I skied through the chowder on Fox's and cut onto the Ledges, finding my great line chock full of chowder and powder. It was soft and deep. Amazing. I was loving it. I then cut across to McHarg's Cutoff to find untracked pow. Awesome.

Next run was a charge down Warren's Way. I watched as some other locals poached the Poma line. I could not resist. With the lift not running, someone had to ski that snow  I went just to the inside of their tracks and feasted on some knee-deep shots and great soft snow. My skis got in a good rhythm and I was loving it. I caught up to them and praised them for their snowhunting skills. Then we stormed down the lower part of the line, avoiding the known obstacles that lurked beneath. Oh yeah...they removed the gear shaft this morning with a large crane. Fingers crossed we will get it back up soon....

Well, three great runs and great powder. I decided to hit Carriage Road-Doug's Drop, and found another great chowder/powder choked line on the run. My skis drove well. The snow on that trail is once again awesome. I cut onto Mountain Marsh enjoying more snow, and then dove into Marshland. It was good...nice snow...and a lot of fun. The woods are once again awesome. I cut across Little Dipper and into Boarderline. Scratchy underneath, but still fun.

I hit East Bowl. I had no problem finding good snow on my side of the trail. After "Big Mama," my skis crossed (stupid skis  ) and I did a face plant into the pow. I was laughing and having a great time. I was now covered in snow and grinning...when I came into the lodge I had plenty of grins from other folks. Oh yeah, pow tastes great!

I took a quick break and did some internet stuffin the lodge, I headed out for three more runs down Ledges. Awesome deep snow, but my legs were done. I pulled the plug at 1:15 or so. A great day for sure!

Well Steve, that is not just encouraging, that's exciting. I didn't expect to see that much snow in the north, so I'm thrilled to hear it. We are getting our choices back. How were the glades? How about the winds? It was really windy on top down in southern VT.

Why you calling trail boss Steve, billski? Also, I take issue with 6" being called boot deep. Boot buckles deep for those with small boots and no risers perhaps. ;)

Er, uh, I was attempting to communicate with human life forms by their diminutive names rather than screen names. BTW "billski" is actually a dog

Separately, I take no responsibility for boot-deep comment. Perhaps big-toe deep is more appropo?:spin:

So your identity is shielded in secrecy, eh? FBI victim assistance program I presume? :-D

Actually, it is on a need-to-know basis... And like the original trailboss, I just ski too fast for folks to get a good look at my mug.
