With pretty reliable forecasts that we were in for a decent dumping for today, I made arrangements with a few friends to hike the mountain to get firt dibs on the forecast 6-8 inches of powder that was supposed to have fallen by daybreak. I had already requested the morning off from work, however everyone else had to go to work by 8:00. Therefore we were scheduled to started hiking by 5:30.
I got up at 4:15 to find only 2 inches had fallen. One guy who lives in Burke called and bailed. However, I couldn't reach the other guy who was coming from Littleton. So I headed to the mountain to see if he was there. The drive to the mountain was freezing mist and it was only 15 degrees. Not a good sign. :???: I found my cohort there and we said we're here so let's do this. It started snowing again at a pretty good clip after we got halfway up the mountain. At the top we decided to head down Foxes Folly since it seemed like the logical thing to do. It skied well and there were some decent drifts. However there were a lot of hard packed bumps lurking under the snow that were difficult to see in the still weak morning light.
The first hour of lift served was good. My tracks down Fox's were almost completely filled in. However, the precip slowly changed from snow to snow and sleet to freezing rain mixed with snow and sleet. Finally it just changed over to all freezing rain which produced a light crust on top of the 4-5 inches of snow/sleet. :x I decided I'd had enough. My last ride to the summit I saw Riverc0il under the lift. Stopped in the lodge and chatted for a few. Then I headed to work
I blame the school system for this busted storm... They jinxed the whole thing by cancelling today's classes YESTERDAY. :smash:
