Date(s) Skied: 2/27/07
Resort or Ski Area: Burke Mountain, VT
Conditions: PP, MG
Trip Report: Couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day... bluebird skies, sun a shinin' bright, temps pushing 30 degrees! Got to the mountain around 11:00, got a ticket, headed out to the fixed grip quad.
Started out with a warm-up on East Bowl. Wow! The views of the Presidential Range were phenomenal! East Bowl was definitely a good warm-up: enough pitch most of the trail to keep moving, but not too much to kill the legs on run #1.
Couldn't resist... had to cut over to the old Poma. I love those detachable Pomas. They're definitely the best lifts in the world. Not to mention that the one at Burke actually makes a turn. Anyway... headed over to Doug's Drop to find some relative hardened (thaw yesterday, freeze last night) PP bumps. They were very irregular, but very skiable.
Hit the Poma again, did Doug's Drop again, and headed back for the quad. Skied The Shoot - The Ledges - Lower Fox's Folly. They were, respectively, nicely groomed - irregular chalk-like bumps - softening packed powder, partially bumped, partially groomed. Fun run. I really like dropping down The Shoot.
Back up the quad, and over to Wilderness - Powderhorn. That's where they were hiding the good bumps! Wow! Had a blast actually zipperlining over there. Nice, softened, PP bumps. Definitely the run of the day.
At some point (I don't actually remember when), I also hit Sasquatch and Cave Man. Both were very nice, with only a few snow snakes. I'm not sure Cave Man can really qualify as a double diamond, but it was definitely fun. The glades are very skiable, with enough room to actually make turns!
Finished the day with another run on Wilderness - Powderhorn.
A fantastic day at a great mountain. My only complaint would be that apparently most skiers there can't really ski bumps, since the only run with actual decent bumps was Wilderness - Powderhorn.
But I can't complain at all... it was such a gorgeous day, and so much fun skiing there. I won't hesitate to go back.
