2006 Trip Report #: 48

Resort: Burke Mountain

Conditions: 1” of new snow on top of frozen MG (ice). :x

Weather: Thick fog in the morning, gradually lifting to cloudy skies. Temps in the low 30’s and falling.

Trip Report: It was a short day for some…the soft snow from the day before had frozen back over. I found TOTB and HC in the lodge…nobody else really. PM and TC met up with us and we headed out.

You could not see above Tower 7 due to the thick fog…and the top the fog was a bit higher.

First run was down Bear Den to Meadows, which was very nice. When we rounded the corner to Darling Point, the surface conditions turned to dust on groomed ice. We were a bit bummed…so we skied down to Lower Fox’s and it got worse.

TOTB was not happy. We went back to the top and skied through the fog to Powderhorn…the fog on this side was worse than the other side. It was very rough to say the least. TOTB skied down non-stop from the knoll on Powderhorn and stopped just above Open Slope.

“This is not good at all. I should have stayed in bed.”

When HC, TC, and PM caught up with us, they realized that he was done.

“Odd place to stop. I think you’re done.”

“Yep.” Said TOTB before waving good bye and heading back to the lodge.

So the four of us headed back to the lift. Next run was down Willoughby (for me) to Darling Point. It was rough. Lower Willoughby was very icy underneath…but edgeable.

Next run was down East Bowl. We had seen the sun come out and were optimistic, but the fog rolled back in. Despite this, the run was amazing. We found that it was edgeable and the snow was soft on top. It was great! The run out, on the other hand, was not good at all. It was too wet at the bottom.

We decided to do it again and it was not quite a nice as before…it was a bit more skied off.

After this, we took a break. TC and PM called it a day. HC was not far behind. I had a banana and went back out just before noon. I did one run off the top—Carriage Road to Dippers (Little Dipper). Carriage Road was more like a sluice way than a trail…and Dippers was not so great either. I skied to the bottom and found that the snow was soft down there and not quite as slow as above. So I did a number of runs down there before going back up and skiing Shoot to Toll Road and Marshland (icy).

I took lunch and then skied down to the bottom for a few more runs before closing with a run down Toll Road.

A rough day…I think that the mountain couldn’t win today…word had it that they waited until midnight to groom but that was not late enough. So I guess it was the lesser of two evils…groomed ice rather than ungroomed ice.

We’re hoping for a good Pond Skimming weekend…

No real pics because the conditions were foggy and ick....
