2007-2008 Report # : 16
Trip Report: Another great day. This Christmas I opted to stick around Burke for some more good skiing and to remain in one place for an extended amount of time.
I got first chair and then proceeded to enjoy a well manicured Powderhorn. Amazing. Edge-to-edge corduroy that was untracked and soft, easy, and deep. I think that new Prinoth Groomer must have gotten to this trail…simply amazing. It was easily the run of the day.
I zoomed down Dipper and over to Open Slope and then to the Poma. I decided to hit Upper Warren’s before the racers got to it. I found that it was firm, but edgeable. It was great to be back up there. The view is simply amazing and the pitch is one that really makes your knees wobble. I zoomed down Lower Fox’s and then back to the Poma for another spin. It was great. Some more snow or snowmaking will cover some of the thin spots on the upper part, but it is doable.
I rode back up and then hit Carriage Road to Lower Powderhorn. Same thing with Carriage Road—well groomed, but thin in places. There is some ice and thin spots poking through. A snowgun or two could fix that up. I jumped onto Dipper Doodle and hugged the right side…finding that it was in good shape. A nice base for more snow.
Next run was Willoughby to Lower Bear Den. It was nice and groomed, but you want to hit it early before it gets sliced and diced.
By now it was getting to be break time, so I hit East Bowl to find it scraped off but fun. It needs another good grooming.
I zoomed to the base to see that the Lower Mountain was packed. This was the busiest day I have seen…with the Lower Lots full but Upper Mountain only 50-60 percent full in the lots.
I checked my skis in and went in the Sherburne Lodge to warm up and check E-mail. Then I headed back up to the top.
At about this time, I ran into MK and we took a spin down Powderhorn, which was still amazing, and then Shoot-Fox’s-Warren’s Way, which was still good. Shoot is getting thin too…but that can be easily fixed. And remember, “thin” is a relative term. This season is still leaps and bounds ahead of last December.
From here we went to ski the Willoughbies and found it packed and getting chopped up. MK and I paused and enjoyed the view before charging back to the Quad. We closed with another lap down Powderhorn before heading in for lunch at the Bear Den Lounge.
Rachael suggested that we try to Number 9 since it had just been tapped an hour before. Wow. Probably the tastiest beer I have had in a long time. I also ordered the ham chedder panini from the new panini bar. It was made to perfection and served to me, MK, and PM who joined us for a brew. Though the sandwich looked small, it was very tasty and filling. There was a lot of meat in that sandwich! The honey mustard was great.
After some good conversation, MK and PM headed out for the day (PM scored her pint glass) and I headed to the bottom for some “cool down” runs  I noticed that the J-Bar was down due to a derailment. They got it going in quick order.
I was impressed with the staff’s ease of handling the crowds at the HSQ. I got in four quick runs…one on each of the lower mountain runs before heading back to MidBurke where I grabbed a hot chocolate and did some work/surfing the internet on my computer at the Bear Den.
By now it was snowing quite hard. We had already picked up 2 inches by the time I had left. Looks good for tomorrow!
So after 16 days on the slopes, I have noticed both yesterday and today that I am back up to my prime, which is awesome considering that it took longer last season and that I have not been in the gym too much. I’m finding that I am charging down the slopes well and making some aggressive turns. The skis are handling great as well. What is the best is that it is only December. Here’s to many, many more great days!
