2006 Trip Report #: 11
Resort: Burke Mountain
Conditions: MG/WS/LG on Upper Mountain, WS/Spring on Lower
Weather:
at the summit and r%^n showers at the base area. It snowed about 1-2 inches at the top while I was there. Temps falling into the 20’s and winds picking up in the PM.
Trip Report: Diehard Day Number 3 I guess you can say. Yesterday was a downright bummer…r&*n and warm temps. So folks were surprised when they heard I was going to the mountain, but I took a chance and figured I had nothing to lose since I was a passholder. I pulled in at 9:40 am to find that I was literally car #6 in the entire lot
The upper mountain had a dusting of snow, and the one route off the top (Willoughby-Lower Bear Den-Warren’s) looked good and the quad was running empty.
I booted up and skated over to the quad. Got scanned and boarded the quad. It felt good to ride back to the top. First run down was surprisingly soft and edgable. The fall line was as good, if not better than before. I was able to make some nice hero turns on Warren’s.
I made about four runs off the top, rotating between Lower Bear Den and Lower Warren’s, before making a beeline to the base. It was completely different—snow showers gave way to r*(n and warm temps. The snow softened considerably and got thinner. I did only two runs down here—Binney Lane was basically mud with some snow, but Dashney was still in good shape. Why they put the terrain elements in there at this point (with only one other route down) might have been premature….but at any rate, still skiable.
I closed with five runs on the summit. It got colder and the snow hardened. Deathcookies formed and it got icy in places. Despite this, it was good for a few hours. I may go back for a couple tomorrow afternoon.
Oh yeah….saw a few locals there who knew me and learned that Santa stopped by the mountain shop to get me a stocking stuffer
