2006 Trip Report #: 14
Resort: Burke Mountain
Conditions: MG/SM/Ice
Weather: Bluebird skies and very cold. Highs in the single digits and maybe the low teens.
Trip Report: Made another trip to Burke. Set my alarm to get up for first chair and it was worth it. The mountain is still covered in fresh frost and snow. I got to MidBurke at about 7:30am. I pulled up to the Willoughby Quad and was the only one there.
I don’t think that this happens on holidays at Killington….anyways, I chatted with the liftie as we waited for the last few minutes to pass…then I boarded Chair 44 and headed to the top. The sun was rising and making the Willoughby Gap and Jay Peak glow. Amazing.
I did Willoughby first…fresh grooming all for me. The wind and temps were cold though….very cold. I got to the base and then rode to the top again. This time I had “some” competition, but not much  Did the Shoot/Bear Den Combo down and found it in better shape then it was on Thursday.
After a break, I hit the top for a few more spins. Conditions held well until about 10am and then got slick. I headed to the base and did a few spins on the HSQ. Bunker Hill was better than before and Dashney as the same. Guns were blasting on Carter Country and Binney Lane. Making some BIG piles of snow. Conditions were fast improving. My one gripe is that the line at the HSQ can get tedious…especially without any singles line….
I headed to MidBurke, grabbed my shell, and went back to the top. It was still COLD up there. Conditions were getting icy, so I did three or four more runs before heading back to the bottom and closing out with four runs down there.
Overall a good day…the parking lots were full and folks were having a good time. Kind of  to do race training on Warren’s Way all day considering that there was such limited terrain open, but without the racers, there would be no Burke.
Snowmaking was fired up on the east side at about 10am. Guns going on the Dippers and at MidBurke. Also guns going on Lower Fox’s, Lower Willoughby (they may have dropped the ropes on it this afternoon….those piles of snow were HUGE!), and on the Lower Mountain. If this weather keeps up, I’d say east side by next weekend.
