Trailboss Day #: 15
Resort or Ski Area: Burke Mountain
Conditions: 3-6 Inches of Pow on top of MG.
Weather: Snow, temps in the 20's.
Trip Report: Back to Burke for more turns. I got up early to get first chair and it was worth it. While in MidBurke, I met the_original_trailboss and some of his friends who were getting ready as well. They usually come in early and have coffee before hitting the lift for AM turns. It was his second day out for the season and his wife's (Becky) first.
I skied down to the Willoughby Quad and was the only person there at 7:50am with a mountain full of pow (now it's annoying because there are TWO quads and not one...so I can't say "the quad" anymore  ). The Original Trailboss, his wife, and two of their friends Danny and Peggy joined me. Now both Trailboss's have a thing for first chair, so we rode up together....after FINALLY being let on to the lift at 8:05 am (I had to drop the rope myself!). We chatted on the lift ride up and at the snow.
At the top, T.O.T.'s friends caught up and we did Willoughby all the way down. Upper was MINT with powder on top of MG. Lower was death cookies underneath and hard pack. Not a nice ride, but better than nothing. It will be better after another groom or so.
Next ride up was with the men. Danny leaned over and asked me, "So how many days do you have this season?"
Before I could answer, T.O.T. replied, "He's a nut! Been skiing a lot!" And he is right. This was my fifteenth day!
At the top, Danny, Peggy, and Becky hit Upper Willoughby while T.O.T. and I peered down the Shoot. We were greeted with "THIN COVER" and "EXPERTS ONLY!" signs. It looked pretty good...the same pow on top of MG.
"How bad do you think it really is?" I asked as I scoped out the one or two sets of tracks down it.
"Looks pretty good to me. Hell, let's go!"
So the Trailbosses headed down full tilt on the pow, enjoying every minute. Danny caught up with us...he had cut across Camper's Carry and down to Upper Bear Den.
"Run of the day. Good call," T.O.T. said. We concurred.
The chute below the 'Meadows' was not too bad, but needed care. On another run we watched a BMA racer go flying down the Meadows and into the chute, almost losing it in the sharp turn onto Willoughby.
From here, we rendezvoused with the ladies and headed down Lower Bear Den to Lower Warren's. Still in great shape. Lower Bear Den is best on skier's left by the way...the snow and fall line are usually best...skiers and riders push the snow to that side because of the double fall line.
We all did a Shoot/Bear Den Run again a couple more times...enjoying the pow. At about 10am, the crowds began to show, but man those first two hours were great...especially the VIP/Passholder's "Power Hour" from 8-9am. Any way, at 10am the other folks went in for cocoa while I did another run down Willoughby and Lower Fox's. The latter was the worst of the day...with more death cookies underneath and even a few soccerball size chunks of ice lurking underneath the snow  I almost got tripped a couple times! It will be better after a groom or two....
And as coincidence would have it, I met up with the "Dawn Patrol" at the top and skied with them down Shoot and Bear Den.
"Man, you're fast!" Danny said.
"Just good luck." I said before telling them to avoid Lower Fox's.
From here we headed back to the lodge. The snow was getting tracked out and it was getting crowded.
I hung out at MidBurke with them before parting ways and heading out for a few runs on the Lower Mountain.
Props to Burke for getting someone out there at the HSQ directing traffic...made a HUGE difference. I think that maybe Trailboss' Burke "Deep Throat" read my comments about this problem and passed on the advice to the higher ups. Anyways, good vibes from folks on the chair....glad to see snow and people having a good time. Dashney had fresh SM on it as did Bunker Hill and Carter Country.
Snowmaking was in force on the east side as well as Binney Lane. A great day and glad to see the place packed.
Great to ski with the_original_trailboss' "Dawn Patrol" as well....hope to do it again soon.
