2006 Trip Report #: 24
Resort: Burke Mountain
Conditions: 3-5 inches of new Pow on top of MG/Ice
Weather: Snow. Temps in the low 20’s.
Trip Report: OK, the whole Sugarplums dancing in my heads and some fresh snow…that happened today. Woke up at 7:30 or so and saw that it was coming down at a pretty good clip. We’d picked up a trace here at my parent’s place, but I knew that the conditions would be good at the mountain. Ms. TB got up and we grabbed breakfast and headed up to the mountain. We opted for Sherburne again…to get all the pampering and luxuries that Burke now offers
I chatted with the parking attendant before we headed up, got Ms. TB’s lift ticket, checked the spare pair of skis in and our bags before heading to the HSQ. First run down Bunker Hill was nice…fresh pow and smooth turns. Oh yeah…Powder Day #2 for me this season. It was still dumping too. We got on the HSQ and then decided to head to the top. As we rode up, I looked out for the_original_trailboss and his distinctive coat…but I did not see him. Turns out that he chose today to change his coat. He showed me his new North Face coat that he scored at the Village Sport Shop.
First run was down Willoughby, which was in decent shape but getting skied out. What was bad was that the base was not just white ice, it was literally ice. Solid ice. :x We edged our way down to Darling Point…Ms. TB was not so happy. Oddly enough, Lower Bear Den and Fox’s were both in really great shape…soft pow/MG made for some nice turns. If only we had enough snow to ski from the Poma to the Lower Bear Den…
We headed to the top again and prepared to do Dipper. Shoot was literally an ice chute. The Dipper…well…solid ice with pow on top…a dangerous combo. Ms. TB was disappointed and shaken, so we took a breather at MidBurke and chatted with the_original_trailboss and the Dawn Patrol, who were packing it up…heard that they had found similar conditions in the morning, so we had not missed much. We spent about 20 minutes inside warming up before heading back out for one more run down the Shoot to the Meadows (the latter was decent) and then down Lower Willoughby (not good…). Ms. TB was very interested in skiing on the HSQ and we did so from about 11 until 2:15pm or so. We took lunch at 12:15 and had to eat in the Sprung Structure because of the crowds. It is a nice addition. The kids there were funny.
Did runs on Dashney, High Meadows, and Bunker Hill. After lunch, Ms. TB did laps on the 110 cm skis and loved the pow on the sides of the trail. She also was seen doing some jumps in the terrain park. I did break away and do one run off the top….Willoughby to Lower Bear Den. The former was treacherous and the latter was still in great shape.
Ms. TB had done four runs in the time that I had done my one run and was getting tired, so we did two more down Bunker Hill before she called it quits. The heavily traveled areas were better thanks to the snow….this is a help, but we need some more. Word has it is on the way.
It was great to catch a lift ride up with nek_girl. She was on a mission of sorts. Burkie Bear also made an appearance. After closing out, I headed up to the Tamarack Grill to get a gift certificate. Rachel, the bartender, was the only really familiar fixture….the place is amazing. Nice lounge and nice dining room. After chatting with her, I headed out to the free ski check (yes folks, it’s free so use it) and packed up. Ms. TB was satisfied with our weekend, despite the bad weather. She is looking forward to skiing some of the other runs and more time up there…as am I. 8am tomorrow morning. Powder for breakfast I hope.
