beautiful weekend up here in the northeast kingdom. certainly wouldn't waste away this fine, cool, and crisp afternoon without fitting in a hike somewhere. i opted for burke to recon the HSQ installation and some shots for the winter.

from the lower burke lodge, signs of the installation look to be going along smoothly. the old sherburne double has been completely disassembled save for one tower and is sitting at the lower burke lodge's parking lot awaiting it's future disposition. the bull wheel and terminal overhead are near the foundation which has been poured at ground level (same for the top of the lift). a new trail just below lower willoughby at a slightly less difficult pitch has been constructed near the top of the lift offering a route back to the quad. the new trail will completely seperate HSQ traffic from descending lower willoughby skiers eliminating a possible dangerous intersection. these folks definitely thought a head. downed trees have been piled up high between the midburke lodge and the FG quad.

ascent was by various trails on and off the map  two of which were previously unknown to me. it is amazing how much more you find during the off season when you poke around in likely places! a little bush whacking ensued when i lost a trail but it made for a fun adventure.

i arrived at the summit to gusts of wind and had to don my fleece. the bitter wind was a refreshing reminder of what is soon to come; however, left my summit stay shorter than i would have preferred. some leaves changing up at the summit, mostly just trees that are not fairing very well with leaves that are instantly dead and dull. we are still awaiting the show up here, but signs of it's impending arrival are all about. we just need our first frost and we will be well on our way.

descent was via various ski trails that could all really use a mow! upper willoughby was recently cut so it looks like that are working over the mountain.

great day to be up high! pumped for the winter.

Don't mow the grass!!! Long grass helps hold gravel and eventually snow in place....

I was at Loon today and the trail grass is in the same condtion...

no pics. while i am also in favor or letting grass grow as i love trails o'natural :) when the stuff starts getting to head level, it takes a few feet of snow to properly bury it.

Awesome! I was hoping that you'd have pics of the quad. Any snowmaking work?

They'll be mowing the grass in a few weeks for the winter.

ah, word. forgot about the snowmaking pipe. a couple dozen snow making pipes were laid out in the parking lot near the old double. not sure if that was old pipe coming out or new pipe going in, but either way it is in the works.

i noticed something interesting about burke's snowmaking setup today. part of the reason that the trails are so aestetically pleasing is that the snow making pipes are all in the woods off the trail. you don't see a lot of snowmaking equipment on the trails, but it is there off to the side.

Yes, that is probably so that they could maintain the natural trail contours with straight lines and avoid yahoos hitting the hydrants (though it happens  :x).
