Some guy wanted to buy my pass as I was leaving Belleayre yesterday. I was appalled beyond belief. These resorts blew tons of snow to barely fill the lifts only to watch it melt away, repeat, repeat, repeat for the first half of the year. Now, conditions were Spring style epic and this guy wanted to steal a ticket from the resort!?!?! $36 could have legally purchased at least two hours of top notch skiing. It might have been even less as many areas have afternoon rates - not sure about Belleayre.

Skiing is an expensive sport...

Dude don't be offended. That's lame. I've bought tickets to the second half of football games and baseball games before. I've even sneaked in....does that mean I have no respect for the NFL? Please.

I had this happen to me many years ago at Killington, and the main reason that I said no was because I save all of my tickets for help in remembering where I skied when I turn old and grey.

I was guilty of this charge back in college. I found many people liked $10 cash instead of an old lift ticket on their Nevica coat.

My friend did it this year at sunapee mid season. I have nothing against it. If you think about it the person you sold it to loses. I mean that $10 for 2 hours. On that price a lift ticket would be $40. Well if he had got there in the morning he could have bought a full day ticket for $50.

Last Saturday I arrived mid day at Sugarbush and was offered a deal in the parking lot for a ticket by a guy who was leaving. Guess he was surprised when I pointed out the season pass on my jacket and kindly informed him that transfers are not allowed. I was not sure how to react.

I've made similar transgressions myself and it's not like I'm saying the guys should be exiled to Florida. But, after seeing many areas struggle to survive this season, there's no way I'm ever giving anyone my pass. Why hurt the activity I love? This isn't exactly a high growth, high profit sport for the local areas. How many new ski areas have you seen pop up? Magic barely surviving, Pkill can't be doing that well xMTBing, Sterling closes and reopens as Tuxedo Ridge - we'll see how long that lasts, Bobcat can't even afford to build a new deck...

Some people have no respect for the industry.

So if you arrived in town, we will say somewhere like Stowe, Stratton, even Sugarbush after lunch and were putting your boots on at your car a guy next to you comes up and offers you their ticket for $20, you would decline or shell out about 50-60 bucks to ski for 2-3 hours?

I am not one for stealing/theft of services, but it happens all of the time, read the police blotter in the Stowe reporter. In college season passes were passed around to everyone. Just a few weeks ago we were in line for tickets at Steamboat and some guy offered us vouchers for $50. We bought 4 and thanked him.

There are even people out there who will clip your pass, almost like pick pocketing. They use some pliers and cut it off when you are not paying attention. That is bad and those people should be reprimanded to the full extent of the law.

I feel similar to what goldsbar posted. It really depends on the area. I'd have no problems selling the remaining time on my ticket (if offered) at a place like Stowe, Killington or Sugarbush. I've bought coupons/vouchers off people as well, although, I never did offer to buy someone's ticket at 2 pm either.

I also don't think that this practice really is theft of services, either. It's rather like paying for a dinner but if you have some leftovers, the restaurant shouldn't care what you do with the "doggy bag". Ski area gets my money for a full day's lifts. If I leave early, I fell it's perfectly OK to sell this time to somebody else, especially if the mountain really charges huge money for the ticket, i.e Stowe.

I got a 3 for 1 deal at Gunstock (I think) last year, but only needed 2, so I gave one to a cute girl who was walking up to the ticket window. Does that make me a bad person? My wife thought so, but that's normal.
