Cane Creek 110 Headset

BL.jpg

110 years is the warranty on the Cane Creek 110 1.5" headset. No joke. That's what the paperwork says. It's a colorful way of Cane Creek getting your attention, a way for them to tell you this headset has a lifetime warranty, that even in a rough-and-tumble application that is typical for 1.5" headsets, they think theirs is not only stronger than dirt, but rock, and longer lasting than titanium.
It's a bit of shtik. But they are 110% behind this headset for a variety of reasons. One is the aluminum they chose to use. 7075 aluminum is almost twice as strong as 6061, which is why they went with the harder alloy. They also went overboard on the toughness of their bearings. The upper bearing, the one that gets pushed around thanks to the steerer working as a lever as you ride, has their Split-Lip Black Oxide bearings. They like pointing out how they've ingeniously sealed the upper race from the elements by having the compression ring captured in the top cap. But we like the bearings, which start out at 52100 steel and are then given an acid bath to make them more corrosion resistant while still being porous enough to retain grease. It's an angular contact bearing, which can resist both axial and radial loads well, as is the bottom bearing. It is sealed with what Cane Creek likes to call a Split Lip, which has two seals per side to better keep out contaminants and hold in grease.
The headset material is 7075-T6 aluminum. The headset works on frames that accept 1.5" steerer tubes and require an external headset. The stack height is 26.9 mm; divided into a top stack of 15.4 mm and lower of 11.5 mm. The upper bearing is Cane Creek's Split-Lip Black Oxide. The lower is a 1.5" angular contact bearing. The warranty is for 110 years. The headset is available in the following colors: Black, Blue, Red, and Silver. The claimed weight of the Cane Creek 110 1.5" headset is 158g (which excludes the preload assembly).
