Twenty-one and done.
I don't normally count how many runs I do but today at Cannon I managed to keep track. A little more than half of them were on the Peabody Express hsq and the rest on the Eagle Cliff triple, which at the 9 a.m. opening initially was the only option while they worked something out with the Peabody. Lots of ungroomed chowder and plenty of shallow untracked on edges and even some trails, like Time Zone, which was a blast all day long. Some decent shots of boot-deep here and there. Link > Ravine also was nearly all ungroomed natural snow - I first hit that around 11 a.m. and was shocked at how much untracked there was on skier's left down that run. (Not anymore there isn't ...) I didn't feel like riding the Zoomer chair this time out but there was plenty of other terrain to keep things interesting - and a lot of silent turns made.
I'm around 10-12 lbs lighter than last season and it makes a noticeable difference in stamina. I went from 9 a.m. to around 12:30, 18 runs, before taking a break. Not bad for first trip of the season if I may say so myself. Then I hit the head and was about to go to the pub when in the lodge I saw an old friend from NH, a one-time boss I've known close to 25 years now and hadn't seen in more than a year. I love when that happens. So I postponed my break and skied three more runs with my buddy. Then the thighs screamed "NO MAS" and I repaired to the pub for one and done ... and a little more chatting with my friend, who came in after taking a couple more runs himself.
Beautiful day, mostly sunny but with a Cannon cloud from time to time with occasional flurries. Little wind and not nearly as cold as I'd feared it would be - highs in the mid-20s. I think.
Fine way to kick off the season (even if it was two months and one day later than my first 2009 outing).
No photos/video as Flip and cell phone both crapped out.
