While I tend to prefer natural snow like the rest of us, this winter is shaping up to be a rare event with little to no warm ups / thaws. We almost never see the ability for snowmaking crews to lay down a base that has virtually the entire mountain skiing well into April . That isn't unique to Cannon, Jay cranked up snowmaking on JFK for the first time in a decade a week or so ago also.

If you are a glass half empty person, you could posit it might never happen again on the East Coast. Glass half full would say take advantage of the window and lay it down deep on as much terrain as possible and have a season for the ages. I'm into mountains taking advantage of the latter since the conditions allow, and no matter how you look at it, it doesn't happen often.

Not sure how Cannon operates (owned compressors, budgets, staffing capabilities), but most crews are going to be wrapping up snowmaking here after Presidents week due to budget or necessity given the conditions, so I doubt saving the resources for later makes sense realistically.
This is Cannon's last week for snowmaking unless it is for emergeny coverage.

Agreed this is about the time they cut out entirely or cutback snd save budget for emergencies but have seen them fire up in March some years pre covid years ? Generaly most do not go into school vacation week unless they have to.

cannon's biggest problem is the hourglass shape, another reliable route through the middle would be a significant improvement, if lower hard does not get open this year, it never will

Given the hourglass shape and the surface issues that result from it, one would think Lower Hard getting gun love to suck up some traffic wanting to head to the base coming from from Skylight, Upper Ravine and Taft. Pipe issues?

They definitely blew the upper part and I thought they blew the lower part as well. They blew turnpike and never really finished it. I'm not sure what's going on that part of the hill

When Skylight is under the guns, they have to blow short fuse. I was told this last year by a snowmaker. Lower hard has not seen any guns this year and will not. Lower Turnpike will see the guns next to finish off what they have blown on the upper section. Snowmaking expansion will turn off on Friday this week. All of the previous came from a person in the know.

Usual shutdown time, some years ago was at BW and saw them shipping out the diesel compressor's they augmented their electric with and think they are already done this year
