Can't be many, unless a miracle happens. I'm half surprised they opened back up at all. Saturday was pretty ugly.

From Cannon's trail repport:

There are quite a few thin and icy areas under this new snow, and it will take more than one night’s grooming to bring surfaces back, so you’ll want to ski or ride with great care today, and stay where the groomers have been.

When Cannon's recommending staying on the groomed, you know it's not good.

It is scary out there, I'm not going out until we have a few fifty degree days, and it softens up, and that is nowhere in the forcast. The highest numbers in the forcast is 38 for next Tuesday and Wednesday. We (our little group) have decided not to go to Attitash for the red parka race tomorrow, either. One guy is hurt, and the conditions are blah!
If you want to, pm me for "employee vouchers" (cannon)

The groomers have been out every night this week and what trails we do have open have been getting better and better, but unfortunately not all the trails have been able to reopen and due to the lack of access the tramway will not be opening again this season.
looks like the tram is closed for the season. they are down to 25 trails.

Anyone know the impact of the tram closing on the summit lodge? I'm hiking Cannon this weekend and a hot cocoa at the summit was an integral part of the plan. :)

To answer my own question - I called and they said yes, the summit lodge will still be open and serving food even though the tram will not be running for passengers.

I just went to Cannon today for the first time this season. Cloudy sky with some flurries made great skiing. The summit lodge was definitely open. Took my nephew to Tuckerbrook for his first day on skis. He loved it. And my fiancee loved Cannon too and wanted to come back soon... Great day at a great resort.

Just got back from Cannon today. There were flurries the whole day and it was cold -- 20 at the base and much much colder up on top. It was so cold that I had to break out the balaclava and needed some toe warmers. Normally, I'm pretty good with cold weather but it felt like mid-February out there.

Tram was closed today but I don't know if it's closed for the season. The summit lodge was open and serving food. I had to duck in there at around noon to thaw out. The base lodge was serving corned beef and cabbage and was doing a special on Guinness (3.50 a pint). There was also a raffle and auction going on to benefit children with cancer so we were all skiing for a good cause today.

Aside from the tram, all the lifts were running. Surface was loose and frozen granular. Icy spots every now and then but not so much. I'd say the amount of ice on the mountain is just about what you'd expect for this time of year. I swiped one of Cannon's trail reports from the lodge and, by their count, they have 22 trails open on the main mountain and 7 on Brookside.

Profile was in good shape. The snow on it was quite fluffy though the side of the trail on skier's right was skied off. Of the trails on top, only Profile, Upper Ravine, Upper Canyon and Tramway were open. The latter three were all in great shape save for some skied off patches which were avoidable or can be skied through. Great runs up top. Went down each trail here at least twice.

Off the Zoomer triple, only Avalanche, Zoomer and Rocket were open. The trails here were in great shape except that skier's right on both Zoomer and Avalanche were skied off/icy in patches. Otherwise, it was great going down these trails.Zoomer was tops among these trails.

Middle Ravine, Lower Cannon and Gremlin held good snow. In the morning, the snow was quite fluffy at times. It was great thatflurries kept falling the whole day so the snow on these trails kept getting replenished.

I started the day on Brookside and it was pretty much frozen granular there.

It wasn't scary out there at all. My friend, who is a solid green trail skier (never even ventures outside of Brookside when on Cannon), was making turns on the upper mountain in the afternoon. Definitely, there were some thin spots and ice, but they were isolated and well-marked. There was always a way around the ice.

In the afternoon, as I sat on the Peabody quad for the umpteenth time, I was trying to imagine that just a few days ago, the mountain had to close for lack of snow/heat/rain/etc. Looking at the mountain around me, it seemed like winter was in full swing. Somehow, the mountain didn't get the memo that spring was around the corner.

A lot of people say Cannon is a hit or miss mountain, Well, today was definitely a hit. It was one of the best days I had out this year. The fact that there was hardly anybody there added to the enjoyment. Make tracks to Cannon now!

I was hiking and camping up there this weekend; it snowed the entire time, day and night. Even around 3am, when I took a "walk", I could see stars up above while snowflakes were falling on my face. Notch weather for sure. Must have been several inches over the course of the two days.

Watch for a TR in the hiking TR's forum. 8)
