Resort or Ski Area: Cardigan State Park - Duke's Ski Trail

Conditions: Tracked Powder

Trip Report: When we arrived at the AMC parking at 10:30 lot it was packed with cars. We got the last two spots on the road that would still allow traffic to pass. I don't think two cars could have gotten by but usually there's so little traffic there is not really a problem. It was beautifully sunny and brrrrisk. Skinning up was fairly easy considering my out of shape middle aged body. My two companions were often waiting for me where the trail leveled. There were only two ski tracks coming down as we ascended but three small groups were heading down as we skinned up. Duke's trail is a classic blue diamond trail with of course only natural snow. The cover was really quite nice - mostly tracked with patches of powder. There's no substitute. At the top of the trail at the intersection of the Manning trail as the trees opened up it was very windy and very cold. The surface above tree line was wind blown and skiing through some of the brush would have been difficult so while we didn't summit either Firescrew or Cardigan (to maybe ski the protected east side) skiing down from that point was not a disappointment.

If the slide show appears green as it did on my computer try clicking on the full screen button on the lower left.

Thinking of an early day excursion up to Cardigan. I've summer hiked but never skied. don't have skins and fixed heel skier so would be hiking/snowshoeing up. Recommendations re: trail to ski down and hike up. I believe you're not allowed to hike either Alexandria or Manning trails. Any other suggestions/advice appreciated.

You CAN hike or snowshoe up the Manning trail as there is no hiking the Duke trail. Once you're at the intersection of Duke and Manning you always have the option to hike further up and access the more open snow fields between Firescrew and Cardigan. Dave Goodman's book has a very good description of this.

On the Alexandria its recommended to hike the Holt-Clark Cutoff to the top of the Alexandria trail.

There's a third trail (and I forget the name) from the bottom of Alexandria a short hike up to skiers right and it finishes at the parking lot.

I look forward to your trip report.

RE: snow softening and depths - I guess I'm asking about sun exposure - Alexandria seems to be more hardwood and will get more early sun. You agree?

The lodge is saying they have 20". Do you think this is adequate snow coverage?

I'm kind of thinking Alexandria trail looks more manageable in general.

Both trails face the same general direction as far as I know and I think Dukes is a bit of an easier ski trail. There is one somewhat difficult water crossing on Dukes other than that is fairly easy. A third hand report said that Alexandria was getting skied off in spot. Both trails might be getting thin.

There's only one way to find out for sure...

and that's to wait for your trip report.

I have been considering a AT setup to get to the back country spots or skin ski areas that are closed for the season. This sounds awesome!

It exactly like a blue square. Its my own invention!

I like that! I invent stuff too, my wife's from Bulgaria so sometimes she asks me what we call things in English, I almost had her convinced a windmill was called a circle sail... It's fun
