Date(s) Skied: 12/30/07
Resort or Ski Area: Catamount, NY/MA
Conditions: Extremely frozen hardpack early, scratch and ice later
Trip Report: My first day out for '07-'08. Work/family kept me from harvesting any of the good that early December provided. I decided to go to Catamount, an area I hadn't skied in 15+ years. I've been itching to get out on my new Atomic Nomad Crimsons, and even though they were definitely not the best choice for today's conditions, I am impressed with how they did with the ice.
I clicked in at 9:30 AM. The mountain was approximately 75% open, and early on was not crowded. I was out as a single today, so ski-to-the-lift was the norm until about 11AM. Lines started to form around this time, somewhat related to the fixed-grip lifts at Catamount.
Early on the ski surface was frozen groomed that held edges well and was and fast. There was a race course set up on Alley Cat (?), but it seemed like it was used for less than a half hour, and each time I stopped at the barrier the marshalls allowed me to ski the course when I asked.
As the day went on the looser frozen snow was scraped and by noon bullet-proof was found on every trail I sampled. By 2:00 PM the fun was gone and I called it a day.
