MA
Resort: Catamount

Date Skied: 3/28/04 - 11am to 3:00pm

Conditions: slush!

Trip Report:

The weather had called for sunny skies for the western part of MA. As we left Agawam, MA it was overcast and 45 degrees. It did not look like Friday at Orford. As we passed the Westfield, MA exit, the clouds broke up and it became sunny with a bright blue sky. Those conditions were the same at Catamount. The temperature was a nice 55 degrees.

The first run was up the Catamount double. We did the Ridge Run trail from the top to get used to the conditions. It was slush, typical springtime. I liked Catamount. The trail pick of the day was Catapault, the double diamond trail. It was bumped up nicely. They say it is the "toughest run" in the Berkshires. It was also cool to ski either NY or MA from this double chair. So we skied both states today. Other trails with a decent pitch and some bumps were Upper and Lower Alley Cat and Upper Glade,

As the day progressed the amount of standing water did as well. I skied into a puddle and the water was over my boots. It was an awesome time today and I am glad I got a chance to check out Catamount.

While loading the car in the parking lot prior to leaving to older men came over and started to ask how the skiing was and what brought us to Catamount. I said we had some comps to use up and how I was impressed with the skiing. I told them I was a passholder for Butternut and they asked what I liked about Butternut and if I would choose to ski Catamount again. I told them that there trails were longer and steeper, which was true. I asked about liftlines in the winter and they said the max is about an 8 to 10 minute wait. They also seemed to know the demographics of skiers at both mountains quite well. I did not notice until after that they had Catamount sweaters on. We think that they were owners of Catamount.

I will post pictures soon.

Is Catapult steeper than Jericho at Jiminy Peak? It's a funny little saying, considering the steepest stuff in the state isn't in the Berkshire County region, but in the Franklin County region (Berkshire East), hence why they can get away with that motto. I must say that both Jericho and Catapult appear steeper than they are due to the contrast to the run outs at the bottom.

Yesterday was a splendid day to ski in the Berkshires, huh, skijay? :) I jealous that they had some bumps there as Butternut was totally groomed.

I don't find Jericho to be that steep. There is that one section at the bottom that is really steep, but it's not a sustained steep run. Catapult is probably more of a sustained steep run, but it is also much shorter than Jercho. Jiminy also has other steep terrain besides Jericho. Catamount is a cool mountain. Kind of similar to the Beast in a way with the nostaligic feel. I skied Catapult on a heavy powder day after an 18" dump a few years ago. That was fun.
