Cell Phone Service in Northern Vermont

Ok...So we all know that Verizon is crap in the MRV and anywhere north of the Matterhorn at Stowe. I'm looking to grab a perpaid Sim card to throw in an unlocked gsm phone so I can make some calls when I'm up there. Suggestions?

Challenge yourself....see if you can survive the 2 days without your cell phone. If your a doctor, EMT, CIA agent or VP Cheney in disguise I guess you can't. I know you have good reasons for having it but maybe the lack of coverage can be an opportunity. If it's the family you can always check in via other ways.

I talk to guests everyday about the cell phone thing. As you probably know Unicell has a tower up here. People tell me that Sprint works well. I am sure other AZ'ers who have coverage on their phones would be happy to let you use their phone, if needed. I see that alot around here. If you have a phone card there are many phones you can use around the resort.

Not the answer I'm looking for but thanks. I'm not going to get into personal issues, but let's operate on the assumption that I need to have the service. I got stuck about a month ago, needing to make an important call. Had to use 1800callatt from the gate house. Cost an arm and a leg. Same thing happened this past weekend.

I am sure other AZ'ers who have coverage on their phones would be happy to let you use their phone, if needed. I see that alot around here. If you have a phone card there are many phones you can use around the resort.

This is not about just this outing, but in general. I unplug from the world when I can, trust me.

What service do you use? Unicel?

AT&T works well throughout the MRV. And yeah, maybe us flatlanders should give up the technology from time to time. Still, cell is my preferred method to meet up with other AZers. It's handy for work and in some aspects makes it possible to escape the rat race. I also like to be able to be in touch with home easily if need be. Not that I can do much from 250 miles away, but still. I know 10 or 12 years ago, not many of us even had cell phones and we all survived just fine, but the convenience is just something we've become used to and at times rely on...

My sentiments exactly. I'd rather make my choice of resorts on terrain and conditions...not because I can be reached at one place and not at the other.
Oh and 10-12 years ago, I did have a cell phone. It was a Zach Morris, but I had one.

Take you verizon cell phone another 50 minutes up the road and go to Jay. They have better conditions and verizon works fine.

I did not realize that Verizon had trouble in Northern Vermont. I have Verizon service and I have never, ever lost a call, even in never never land of Northwestern Maine. I will have to test this if we head further north into Vermont on friday.

Mad River Valley is horrible. Stowe is spotty on the southern section of 108/Nothing on Northern 108.

FWIW I had Sprint and Verizon phones when I was up there the other week. While neither worked at the Golden Lion, my Sprint phone worked about a mile up the road once I got on higher ground and all over the mountain at Sugarbush LP and ME while the Verizon was spotty throughout the area.

The thread title suggests you are looking for a broader amount of information which might be why you got answers not specific to the question in your original post. I actually had to re-read your original post for clarity after your response to tjf67.

You guys are right. I was in a pissy mood plus my post was ambiguous, sorry. I was just in a rush to get shit done yesterday.

I found an interesting article in the Boston Herald that answered gave me the answers I was looking for.

When up at JAy, watch out for roaming. The Canadian signals can be border jumpers and kill you on roaming. Every month that I get my bill I have to call Verizon and explain to them that I never step foot in Canadia. They will emove it, escpecially when 1 moment you make a call saying Burlington and the next says Canada. Makes billing a pita.
