Big Bears Lodge about $120 a night, very close

To really get cheaper you need to get outside of the valley ie the golden eagle in marlboro.

Also things to consider is this. Big Bear and Kitzhoff are a walk from the Silo, so you can have a few cocktails. Matterhorn is a walk from Fenneseys/Deacons Den AND has a cash bar with a pool table in the lounge area....I hear good things about the Grey Ghost as well.

Not a member...do they have special deals? As far as what I would consider cheap - I was looking for $30, dorm room style lodging, since I usually save my big faces for trips out west.

Thanks rivercoil, that hostel is exactly what I'm looking for. A shame it's not closer to Mt. Snow but definitely within striking distance of a few other mountains in the area...

the ski world needs more dorm style lodging, it is sorely missing. i am also amazed folks can consider 115-130 cheap for one night of lodging. defining cheap is definitely important to do when looking for suggestions

Indeed, 115-130 is not even close to my definition of cheap.

The trojan horse is a pretty cool place. I've stayed there a number of times. $20 a night last year, may have gone up slightly. It's a good place if you're skiing Okemo or Killington and coming from the south. Bring your own linens though, sleeping bags not allowed.

When I go overnight I only stay at hostels or split a $100 room four ways. I should work on compiling a list of ski hostels like Riv mentioned in the Northeast. There are more than you think but def. not enough.

Another good one is the Turn of River lodge near Killington right on Rte. 4.

I just tried the Cranmore Mountain Lodge in N. Conway when we went to Attitash. I wouldn't really recommend it, the place is a total fire trap and wasn't even worth the $25.

I don't know any off hand near Snow. Never looked because it is close enough to me for a day trip. There probably isn't much because most folks are in the same boat as me.

marc, thanks for the report on that place in n. conway. i considered checking that place out but never got there. also in that neck of the woods is Hiker's Paradise in Gorham which i think is under $20. quality place but the beds are really crappy. turn of river lodge is great! i stayed there when sampling the mad river valley a few years ago which was an hour each way, not too bad considering round trip from home used to be 3 hours each way. if you go mid-week and it isn't busy, they will put you up into the actual rooms instead of sending one or two people downstairs to the bunks, thumbs up! grampa grunts is near jay for those looking to stay up in the neck of the woods in the cheap. it isn't listed as an official hostel, but it is dorm style and priced in the 20s with a kitchen downstairs. lots of college kids, likely a party atmosphere on the weekend. that's all i can think of off hand.

I disagree. Dorms serve a rough noisy croud, they offer a bad image to a resort and inn keepers don't like maintaining them on their property. It's much harder to get a good night's sleep (something so essential to a good day's skiing) in them as well. The same goes for AMC lodges, although usually they aren't rowdy. Obviously you are in the demographic that they serve, though.

Ya, I think half that is expensive. Futhermore, if you are willing to walk up and drive an hour to skiing, you can save quite a bit on lodging.

Gorham has a number of $50 or less motels. It's actually the best town to stay in Northern N.H. It's an hour from Sunday River and an easy drive to Wildcat. The rooms are all warm and clean. The beds excellent. You can also get Montreal T.V. stations on the cable. There's a big Supermarket on the Berlin road, too. I've stayed there and driven to Bretton Woods and Canon as well.

ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME?!?! i got a good laugh out of this response. specifically me being the demographic the AMC lodges would serve. NOT. way too expensive for me and i would rather be camping than in a hut any ways. with AMC prices the way they are, AMC huts are more geared towards well to do city folk looking to get out a few times a year in the out doors (all due respect to those hard core outdoors people that do the huts). have you ever stayed in a hostel? the hostels i have stayed in were all extremely quiet with some of the nicest and respectable people you could ever meet. i am sorry to say your comments don't reflect reality but rather a small segment of the dorm style lodging you seem to have been exposed to (assuming you are speaking from experience about this?).

agreed about gorham being cheap. i have stayed in the hikers dice in gorham and based weekend trips to cannon from there. at $15 a night (it has since gone up), it was a no brainer.

Sorry, fella.

You're in the under thirty croud that cramms into small spaces, aren't you? Sorry if I confused you with the AMC lodge set.
