Conserving body for skiing

So I have a little dilemma I am facing. Skiing is my ultimate passion, my favorite activity and sport (obviously, I am hanging out on Ski Forums).

Between the months of April and October I also play indoor soccer. Normally, the indoor soccer thing is over by October 15 and I start spending more and more time on the treadmill getting into shape for the ski season. This time around, soccer has been extended into January and I am not sure if I should sign up or stop playing and save the body for skiing. As much as I enjoy playing soccer, I really don't want to sustain some dummy injury like a jammed toe or twisted ankle/knee/wrist or something more serious that will cut into my skiing. I have thought about playing but taking it really easy (playing D or in the goal) but knowing how I get, 15 minutes into it I will be going at it full steam.

Thoughts? Suggestions? How do you guys deal with similar situations, or should I just stop being a pansy and just go play?

I'm in the same boat. For me its lacrosse. My seasons don't overlap but blowing out a knee in lacrosse is a distinct possibility (I know its a possibility in skiing too). To take the situation even further, my summer league consists of mostly kids in HS, college, or just out of college. Playing at that speed spells trouble. I'm even considering giving up our traditional Thanksgiving football game to preserve the body.

When I step back and look at my situation I have to focus on the future. I plan on skiing until my body can't do it anymore. Ending my lacrosse career makes sense when I consider all of the injury possibilities. Not to mention my degenerative disc that doesn't feel so good after a lax game. Ski on my friends!

I guess it's a risk/reward thing. Are you injury prone? How often have you gotten soccer injuries that would keep you from skiing for more than, say, a week?

I wouldn't count on playing and taking it easy. Like you said, that would go out the window after 15 minutes; plus I doubt your teammates would appreciate it if they thought you were taking it easy.

I personally wouldn't play any organized sports right now, but that's easy for me to say, since I'm a lazy bastard and I don't play organized sports anyway. I have a friend who loves skiing, but wouldn't dream of skipping volleyball for risk of injury. Everyone's calculus is different.

I am getting a "skip soccer" vibe here. Either that or I show up and force myself to stay in goal.

I wouldn't skip soccer, especially if you love playing. .soccer is a great aerobic workout and as a foot skills game it actually helps improve your skiing. Keeps you quick on your feet.

And I wouldn't worry about injuries either, unless you're determined to "take it easy" in which case you are guaranteed to get injured.

play...i mean, you can step off the curb and break your ankle, you cant live in a state of "what if" ....if you like and enjoy it, then play, soccer is a great sport and great cross train to skiing.....

If you enjoy playing soccer then go and do it. It's a good workout and will get your legs ready for the next skiing outing.

I have too many activities with potential of injury- if I started saving myself for any one activity I'd be doing nothing. Instead, find activities that you can do while injured.

Your really talking about protecting your body for skiing. As other have mention, can't live your life like that.

Conserving your body for skiing is another thing, I have burned out on too much activities in the past. It's sometimes a fine line between pushing yourself and giving it a rest.

Stay with the soccer...

I've been doing martial arts for the past 7 years and I had the opposite situation around 2 years ago. I had a big test and I had to decide whether to keep skiing and risk injuring myself before the test. I decided that both activities were important...with the exception of calling it a season a week before the test, I kept up both activities (2 - 3 workouts a week and skiing every other Sunday).

Now, I'm just an intermediate so I'm not sure if my injury risk from skiing was all that high, but it was no big deal doing both activities.

Keep playing, if you don't you may end up getting lazy.

I play competitive Volleyball twice (sometimes more) a week and feel it keeps me in shape for skiing. Even during the season. As for injuries, I tore my Achilles March of 2005 and it took six months to heal. But I was back on the slopes the day after Thanksgiving.

Moral of the story, like many have said is to not be paranoid about what could happen and just keep good form in whatever you do, stretch out and hope for the best.

If you have chronic problems - knees, back, etc... Than maybe a Dr.'s visit may be the best advice you can get.
