Could someone please explain moguls to me?

Oh I wouldn't say any ski. Try skiing bumps on an old pair of 210 Kniesel White Stars. I found out the hard way they just want to go straight despite all my efforts.

Plake can rock the bumps on 220s.

I have a dedicated bump ski and realize it does make a difference, but if I'm not using those skis that day, I can still ski bumps competently.

I learned how to ski bumps on 200cm Rossi 4S's back in the day. I also would take 207 GS skis into the bumps back then.

I've also read in another post you mentioning the tails of your skis are too long for skiing bumps well. That makes no sense. Too stiff sure. Too long, no.

I took my atomic arc 207's into the bumps a few times back in the day. i also struggled with having my tails catching the face of the bump that was behind me. Maybe i could've adjusted if i used them enough but it just wasnt much fun skiing those beasts in moguls. actually, it just wasnt much fun skiing on them period.

Some skis are better than others for skiing bumps, but a decent bump skier can make anything under their feet work okay.

I agree and made the same observations. I have watched a friend of a friend ski Magic in the bumps, the trees etc on 216 DH skis. Not my idea of fun but it can be done. I've also seen Glenn Plake destroy MaryJane on DH skis in one of warren Miller's movies.

right, but I think with modern equipment, it's more the stiffness of the tail not being able to flex down the back face of the bump, making them "catch" than the actual length. I have this issue a bit with my Motives and they're only 175cm.

Well, respect. You are braver in the bumps than I am !

200cm Rossis on bumps... lol... thats just bad ass

I'm not terrible at bumps, and I'm not really trying to blame my skis either... I love my Phantom SC80 185s ... honestly I think the main thing limiting me is that my theighs will give out and get weak after ripping down a few dozen moguls.

My technique isn't that bad... it's just been a long time since I've done wall-sits and conditioning like that.

Moguls are hard on the legs, man! :spin:

You're just a kid. That's just what we skied on from the mid 90's back. My 204 K2 extremes were pretty good in the bumps, until they got bent anyway ...

man that still has to be one of the longest threads ever on alpinezone. I'm almost afraid to go back and read some of what I posted in there.

Enlighten me.

That's an easy one- they're fun.
Some like it so much they even do it when there isn't any snow around.

Ah the good ol' days! I remember it well. And twenty years earlier I was taking them on with my wooden skis, bear trap bindings and lace up boots. These kids have it so easy these days.

Ok, I'll try: it's all about the difference between boarding and skiing!

No, I'm not trying to bash boarders or even making fun of boarding. But on skis, it can actually FUN to ski bumps, as long as you choose the appropriate size for one's skill. When I rocket down some small bumps, I feel like I'm dancing with the music! The rhythm!

Well, you probably ask "but most of the skiers I see on bump fields are awkward and definitely NOT dancing!" That is true. I only get those ZEN moment at maybe 5% of my bump runs. But I keep working on them so the next one will be better than the one before, till I get a good one.

So yes, technical challenge for skiers. With a huge reward when we get them right once in a while! It's no difference than hiking for 1/2 hr in search of powder, only to find frozen crust under a dust of snow. One might ask, what's the appeal of hiking?

I also don't get why skiers love when a super steep trail gets "all bumped up". To me that just makes it easier. It's like taking a tough rock climb and putting in stairs.
YEAH! That's another BIG ski/board difference!

On a board with only 1 short edge instead of 2 long ones, steeps are much harder. Very few boarders are really good enough to manage steeps. Put in some bumps, you got natural speed break, aka, stairs on a rock face!

On skis, it's not hard to carve/slip down a steep trail for anyone who can parallel ski. So comparatively, steep bumps are harder than just steep.

I think it's the final test for conquering a mountain. Everywhere else on the mountain, you can pretty much choose where to make your turns. If you're in the zipper line of a mogul field, you're turning pretty close to exactly where the mountain is making you turn. Add in the fact that the bumps are approaching at rates faster than 1 bump/second and the bar is set pretty high for skill and reaction time. Pick a resort with a top to bottom mogul run and you can test your endurance in 3K vertical feet of bumps. Think that sounds hard, lets toss in 2 kickers so you can spin or invert while you're in the middle of this test. Oh yeah ... love the bumps!

If the thrill of completing it isn't enough, just take a look back up the hill and watch people exploding in the same bumps you just conquered. There aren't very many people that can "fake" the bumps.

I strictly board and I love the bumps, are they my favorite, heck no! Am I the best at them, heck no, but I can hold my own! Do I Iook as graceful as a skier can, heck no (then again I have seen very few boarders who look graceful going through moguls)! Do I care what others think of me while going through moguls, heck no! Moguls are definately something that will make your body burn, I enjoy them from time to time and I do understand why skiers enjoy them. Sidenote, My wife is really good at them on a board, she has more patience!
