Date(s) Skied: 1/30/12
Resort or Ski Area: Crested Butte
Conditions: Bluebird with Groomers
Trip Report: We got a three vouchers to ski at any resort in CO from attending the SIA show in Denver so we figured we would go down to CB get a few turns in and visit with some friends. We left Alma around 8 and got to the mountain around 10:30, not a bad ride, followed the Arkansas Headwaters for a ways. The weather was great, it was about 30-35 degrees with the sun shinning and basically no wind. The only thing missing was powder.
It being a monday and with no new snow the place was basically empty, which made for good fun cruising on fresh corduroy. We met up with a friend that is an instructor there so he was able to show us around the mountain. We rode up the Silver Queen quad a few times and came down Jokerville, Twister, and a few of the others on the front beside them. We met up with our friends neighbor and took a few runs with him. He came across like he was a good skier, but seemed little wild. Of the four runs that we took with him he hit two trees in two separate accidents. Yikes! We parted ways after the second impact as he went down to sit the next few out.
We headed over to East River lift on the other side of the mountain. Resurrection rode pretty nice, but it was brutal being over there looking at all the extreme/expert terrain that was closed. We later found out that the day after we left they opened up the Teocalli Bowl and the Headwall. We popped into the trees off of Resurrection and found a little bit of snow but it was pretty rough. Not nearley enough snow in there to keep us, so we rode courderoy for the rest of the day with a few bump runs thrown in the mix.
Got down to the truck around 3:30 and fired up the grill. We ended up having a good day followed up by a good night Gunnison. It was basically a tease riding there without any powder, so we will be back next big storm they get.
