Ski Area: Crotched Mountain, NH

Conditions: Groomed Hardpack

Trip Report
: Very nice day at Crotched yesterday. Took a lesson in the morning and got some good tips on improving turn initiation and getting on my edges better...paid for a group lesson but was the only intermediate so I ended up getting a private.

Conditions on the groomers (which is basically most of the mountain) were good considering that they got a dose of NCP last week. Definitely crunchy underfoot but still completely edgeable. It was actually better on the busier trails since the traffic helped to dig up the top layer. Ungroomed areas, however, were another story...the snow looked nice but was covered by a hard crust layer on top. It was a shame since the coverage was good on the gladed trails (which are spaced out and not steep).

It looks like Crotched is expanding their trail count...there's another short novice trail to skiers right of Galaxy and there were some narrower trails cut out between Galaxy and the terrain park. From the new novice trail, I could see what I think is a T-Bar lift going to the true summit...it would be nice if at some point they could use that lift or put another one there.

Lift lines...nonexistent all day. Enough said.

I have become a real fan of the lodge at Crotched...it might not be pretty but it's so much more spacious and better laid out than most other lodges I've been at.

Crotched may not have the terrain variety of some bigger places and it may be a bit tough to get to, but it's become a family favorite...the spacious trails and low crowd factor make for a much more relaxed ski day.

That is actually the really really old T-Bar lift from years ago. :) And that new trail kicks ass, as it continues up to the old/new summit. The summit will be extended up to the top, hopefully sometime this summer. You can see where the trail will be coming from at that hairpin turn. Not to mention one of the new summit trail is supposed to be a nice double black.

Don't forget, the cleanest bathrooms, and cubbyholes for all. :)

It's a good place to go and casual ski. It's not a race, lots of 'little trails'. Wish they'd turn the section of woods between galaxy and the new trail into a glades. That'd kick ass. The current glades, well, it isn't, it's a trail with a couple of trees. :-D

What's even cooler is the trail you can see on the side of the new trail. If your standing looking directly at the old TBar run, look directly to your left. Ahead you will see a really narrow cross country looking trail, which a square sign with an 'Easy' circle on it. That old sign is one of the original trail signs from the OLD Crotched Mountain.
