Resort or Ski Area: Crotched Mountain

Conditions: Groomed crunchies

Trip Report:

Burned rubber after work to get some night skiing in for a few hours. As usual for a midweek after work outing, not many people on the slope/in the lodge, which leads to not even having the lift line seperators being up. Good for me! :)

In the two and a half hours I was there, I went over pretty much every trail. Generally, they fit into 2 catagories. Crunch, or not AS Crunchy. The snow itself was in good shape, but the warmth of the day had led to the snow turning into a fairly stiff crunchy surface. Moonwalk and parts of galaxy where strange, however. They actually had fluffy powder. Anyway, rundown on the trails:

Velocity, Pluto's Plunge, Meteor, Big Dipper, etc (Pretty much all black and blue terrain):

Very fast, but very crunchy. Definatly felt in in the legs having to sidecut into the crunch. NOT icy in any way, just crunchy on the surface, but very hard. With enough speed, trying to cut across a trail felt like being on a bumpy dirt road. :-D That was the hardest part, keeping speed DOWN because it was VERY easy to go pretty fast. Allot of fun, just a bit of a workout on the legs.

Galaxy, 'New Trail', Super Nova, Shooting Star, etc (Pretty much all the green terrain):

I'm not sure why, but Galaxy and Moonwalk actually had powder on them. I'm guessing it's snow that was blown up or was kicked up during turns, but it was actually a good 4 to 6 inches, and it was unexpected when you whip around the turn on Shooting Star. Overall, the left hand side of the mountain was not as crunchy as the right hand side, but for green terrain, was all in good shape.

Last month sometime they added some 'waves' twards the bottom of Comet. While fun, if you're going to bring a first timer/hasn't skied much, I'd 'escort' them around, or at least warn them. They caught me suprise after I forgot they where there and had just barrled down Comet drop and still had some speed when I came across them. Okokok, so I was barreling thru a slow zone. No one was in the way. :)

The terrain parks have been modified for the big jump thing they had last week, and are still that way. They are primarily big ramps, with big jumps, which a big time me considering exactly how I could NOT break my neck trying them out. :) They look fun, but while I'm better, I'm not to big air level quite yet. :)

The only other thing I can think of was mentioned by hammer in an earlier report.Final Frontier was crunchy as hell. Hard to have fun in there when the surface is so stiff. Really wish they'd open the section between galaxy and the new trail a bit, and have some glades going thru there.
