Day trip limit

what's yours? My limit is about 3 hours.

Its not getting there, its the getting home that kills me on daytrips.


we havent had a "what's the, where's the, top ten ski areas, hardest, steepest, etc etc" thread in a while. :smile:

3 hours as a general rule which gets me as far north as Okemo. right conditions i'd be willing to do 4+ to do a sugarbush day.

4 hours for a day trip. Gore is 3 hrs. 50 mins. Never been to Mount Snow but I figure that would also be 3:50. Hunter is 2 hours and Belleayre is 1:50.

2 and a half to Sugarloaf is about as long a day trip as I want to do. I am doing it on friday!

For me..if it's 3+ hours..like the Catskills..I like to stay one night and ski two days

If it's 5-6 hours like southern/central VT..I like to stay two nights and ski two days

If it's 7+ hours like Northern VT..I like to stay three nights and ski three days..and the last day of skiing I like to quit by 130PM so alot of my drive home is in daylight..

20 years ago, without kids, my wife and I would do day trips from Albany, NY to Sugarloaf.

With old age setting in, and a 2-year old and a 9-year old in tow, 2.5 hours (conveniently CT to Mount Snow) is the max . . . and then we need to stay the weekend and find some nap time (for the kids and the adults)

late season I will drive 4.5 to 5 hous back from Sugarloaf. Usually I leave from Sunday River. 2 hours up. I really don't do many round trip days. I try to get a cheap room so I spend my time making turns than driving.

For an up and back family trip, a little over 2 hours one way is my limit. Gets us about as far as Waterville or Loon.

Longest trip so far was 4+ hours one way to Jay Peak, but that was with 2 overnights.

If the budget allows, I'd like to do more overnights next season. It's real nice to be close to the area and already have my gear ready when I get up in the morning.

3:15 to Killington and that's the usual end of day trip range for me. MRV would be 4:15. Never done it, but would if an overnight just wasn't an option. I don't mind the drives all that much as long as I have some company. Solo kinda sucks, but that's what the satellite radio is for.

3 hours one way would be my limit depending on roads.
3 hours on VT 100 is a whole lot more wear and tear on the mind/body than 3 hours on I-87.

When I taught at Jay Peak I would run home once a month to pick up mail, check things, etc. Done skiing and sweep at 4:30 pm, home south of Albany at 10:00 pm, Back in car at 2:30 am, back at Jay booted and ready for 8:00 am privates.

4 hours should get you to K if you travel at the right time and take the Bennington route using the shortcuts throught the park in Troy. 4 &1/2 if you take the Fort Ann/Whitehall route.

That Bennington by-pass coupled with the Troy shortcut should get you to K from Summit in 4 hours flat. We do K in 3:20 from Northern Jersey if we don't stop along the way.

Was thinking the same thing! Pre kids and when they were smaller and would sleep in the car up and back...3 hr day trips to Killington were the norm. Now, it requires an overnight stay. Heck, even Mount Snow (2 hours door to door) has become a challenge with teenagers.

I try and keep my day trips down around 2.5. As with 2knees, it's not the ride there I mind, it's the ride home.

I can hit MRV and Stowe at right around 3.5, which isn't too bad, but if I'm heading up there, I'm crashing at my old house mate's place.

As the vast majority of skiing I do is day trips, ideally I want my home mountain to be 1.5 hours away or less though. Going to give Ragged a shot next winter as it falls in that range.
