While it is a tragedy, and I can only offer condolences for the snowboarder and his family
The fact of the matter is we are reminded of this hazard every day we slide on snow...its on our lift tickets, posted on signs when we buy lift tickets, and Its part of the code, that we need to understand that injuries, and death are the inherent dangers of our snow sliding sports.

I'm not saying that wearing a helmet will protect us from everything but I'd like to know if the rider was wearing a helmet or not.

Inherent risk... It's a double edged sword...

Pushing limits to experience excitement while replacing fear with thrills and enjoyment is why many of us embrace this sport...

Be careful out there... Helmets sometimes do help.. but to depend on it is a mistake..

Helmets certainly help, but not an all situations. There was another recent death on the slopes a week or two ago involving a man in his 70's from Cape Cod. He was wearing a helmet.

I think the report on that one stated "chest injuries". Out of respect to the family and friends of the person who was just killed, however, maybe we can discuss the pros and cons of helmets on a different thread. It's always tragic when something like this happens.

Always tragic indeed. There really is no point in having a helmet conversation. dmc said it all

i agree

stop the helmet questions. it's not really the point of the thread. i had a minor scare last night that could have ended badly. I was on Smith Walton after a fresh groom. Nobody around me. I was on the steep part before the road hugging the left side. I hit a patch of ice underneath a patch of powder. I briefly lost control and almost went over the left side into the trees. I am a somewhat conservative, in control, responsible expert skiier. I am now going to be even more conservative. I may even guide my ski purchase next year to emphasise medium speed carving and grip. I was lucky to keep upright and lucky that the ice patch didnt continue to the edge. My helmet would not have saved me at the speed i was traveling. My thoughts go out to his family. Be careful out there.

My condolences to Andrew's family and friends. I am also thinking of the Colby community ( my alma mater) who have had more than their share of untoward news and loss this academic year.
