I've been a big TiVo fan for some time now. We just got Direct TV installed with a dual channel TiVo receiver. It is simply awesome! Record two shows at once and watch a third recorded show. I'm not a huge TV person, but this setup is cool. 8)

I don't know how I ever lived without it. We mostly use it to pause live tv and record Blues Clues for the little guy so that we can bring one up when he throws a fit because some j@ck@$$ changed the Nick Jr. schedule.

As a new parent, we found TiVo let us catch our favorite shows when we wanted. If the show started at 8 PM and the little went to sleep at 8:20, we would just start it at the beginning and catch up by blasting through the commercials. Wait till your daughter grows up, B. It's great for grabbing a bunch of Kids' shows. I try to limit her TV intake (she prefers that I read her a book) but some limited quality shows are fine and probably even good for her (in moderation, of course). My wife loves to set up Season Passes for shows. I like seeing the programs that TiVo randomly records once it "learns" what we like. It's more the technology that intrigues me rather than the shows it records.

I was just busting on you Greg, believe me I wish I could say I wasn't much of a TV guy... I always have that damn thing on, our daughter is already trying to watch it as much as she can... Its funny you mention recording shows because of the kids, my wife thought was already mentioning that. I'm starting to think that just cancelling cable would be the better solution, I might actually get something done every once in a while that way...

We now have two Directv Tivo's both of which can record two things at the same time. We do not really care much about most tv shows, however, we do like certain sports and certain shows. Tivo lets us watch things when we want. It lets us record, flip back (if we miss something) and run stuff (like soccer goals) in slo-mo. It lets us see the news when we want to not when they show it. And....IT LETS US CUT OUT ALL THE COMMERCIALS! Now, even if we are watching "live" we simply pause for a few minutes, get munchies, drinks, or just talk a bit, and then restart the show and whip past the commercials. We love it.

Yeah....I'm pretty torn between really wanting Tivo because of the little one, or ditching TV entirely since it's a huge time-waster.

Then again, what else am I going to do at 4AM when I'm up feeding the baby?

Everytime I look at that tivo box its on record :-? It just starts on its own. I looked in the auto record areas and nothing is set to record. Anybody else have this problem?

It's recording everything you watch (and what you say and do) and sending it to the government.

Kill your TV.

TiVo will record stuff on its own that it thinks you'll like based on previous shows you've recorded, thumbs up/down settings, etc. I would guess that's what your seeing. When viewing the "Now Playing" list you'll notice shows with a TiVo icon next to them. Those are the recordings TiVo picked to record. Of course, these will be purged first to make space for any shows that you manually tell it to record or have season passes for.

One thing that now bugs me about DirecTiVo is the inability to network it like you can with a vanilla Series2 TiVo. The phone line at my DirecTiVo's location is on the fritz and I wanted to get it to download it's schedule from the Internet versus dialing up. Unfortunately, the Direct TV version of TiVo disables the USB ports so putting it on a home network is not possible. This is the only thing I've found so far about DirecTiVo that I don't like; although it's a pretty big limitation, IMO...

Make sure you turn off the option where it records shows that it thinks you like... I can't remember what it was called...

Ah! There it is. I believe it's Tivo Suggestions.

I've found a handful of programs that TiVo recorded to be pretty cool, e.g. some real obscure show from the History Channel that runs at 3:30 AM....stuff like that. It also is great for grabbing kids' shows. Again, it doesn't hurt anything to let TiVo record these. It'll just push out the older stuff to make room for stuff you're telling it to record as you need it.
